About the Author
George Lovell is a Methodist minister and consultant in the field of ministry and mission. He has published widely and was awarded a Lambeth Palace DD by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2006. Dr Neil G. Richardsonwas Tutorin New Testament Studies and later Principal of Wesley College, Bristol. He served as President of the British Methodist Conference in 2003-2004.

Edited volume of other people's work masquerading as authored material

Does not belong in a collected works volume. The *editor* Douglas writes a total of about 5 paragraphs. If you want to read Schutz and Wittgenstein, buy their books, not this. If you want a Douglas book, buy Purity and Danger, which is unqualified genius and the book for which she is, deservedly best known. This particular book, on the other hand, gives absolutely no insight into Douglas or any of the authors excerpted and is an obvious cash grab by Routledge.

Something I've since learned - avoid anything that Douglas edited or co-authored, the quality of the books is usually middling to poor compared to books she authored. Also, unless you're a specialist, it's fairly pointless to read more than one of her Torah books. While the quality of the research is uniformly high, they're all extremely similar and only of interest to specialists.

With each menu, she provides a time line to get the cook focused to avoid last-minute surprises. Her menus and recipe suggestions reflect simple and unpretentious foods that emphasize flavor. She leans heavily on currently popular Mexican and Italian cuisines, but she doesn't neglect Indian and Moroccan traditions. She even has a Passover seder to feed a large extended family. Wyler eschews all manner of processed foods, presenting recipes calling for fresh ingredients. But she avoids anything so exotic it might put off the fussy eater. Excellent treatment of neglected subject. Buy It.

`Cooking for a Crowd' by Susan Wyler has come out in a new, substantially larger edition, based on a volume originally published in 1988, and I, for one, am really happy to see it. Among all the various genres of cookbooks, those dedicated to cooking for large numbers of people are very difficult to find. Even many works on meals for entertaining only cover recipes for six to twelve. Of those books I have reviewed, the most notable exception is Martha Stewart's now classic original book, `Entertaining' which gives us recipes for 25 or more. As a dedicated viewer of the Food Network, I can also say with some authority that in all their programming for the last four years, I have seen but one show done on Tyler Florence's `Food 911' show which gives recipes for feeding a large crowd. Even otherwise excellent cookbooks such as David Waltuck's `Staffmeals' doesn't give us recipes for serving a large group of people, and I am sure he feeds a lot more than eight or twelve people at his restaurant's staff dinner. And, the only other book I have seen (the name escapes me, as I have not yet reviewed it) costs a whopping $60 retail for something no larger than the usual $35 Culinary Institute of America or `Cooks Illustrated' volume.

I have to believe there is no great market for this subject, although I am amazed that I can find more books on the cooking of Tuscany than I can on cooking for a church fundraising dinner. This, of course, is not true of baking, especially bread baking, as there are many books that deal seriously with professional bread baking and techniques for multiplying recipes by relatively large amounts.

Cookbook publishing executives must simply never hear of any crying need for these kinds of books, or, cookbook authors simply have little interest in writing them. Before exploring Ms. Wyler's book, lets think out loud a bit on what it takes to make four to six interesting dishes for fifty (50) people. I have some grounds for doing this, as I have been a sous chef in a church kitchen where we have done exactly this for the last several years.

First, you need dishes that can be made ahead, refrigerated for a day or two, and heated up at the last minute.

Second, you need some dishes such as salads that do not require reheating, and will also not wilt down overnight in the refrigerator, in order to not overload your ovens.

Third, dishes with relatively inexpensive and common ingredients are best. You do not want to price your macaroni salad to $5 a portion by adding 100-year-old balsamic vinegar.

Fourth, you probably want ingredients that are available the year around, and are of reasonable quality the year around. Thus, apples, white mushrooms, broccoli, dried pasta, and ground beef are excellent ingredients while asparagus, dandelion greens, peaches, and grapefruit may not be good the year around.

Fifth, you want recipes where amateurs can do the prep work, and I don't mean dedicated amateur foodies.

Sixth, you need dishes that will keep well in either heated hotel pans or large slow cookers. Dishes with gravies that may separate shortly after reheating will not do.

Seventh, you should be able to do most recipes without a lot of specialized equipment, but if a food processor will whiz up lots of slicing and dicing, it's good to have that info.

Ms. Wyler's book hits the mark on almost all these counts.

In addition to getting high marks on my points, she has done especially well to arrange her recipes by both type of occasion and by number of guests, assuming that you will have a lot more people coming to a wedding supper than you will to a family Thanksgiving dinner. And, before you complain that you can find recipes for a Thanksgiving dinner in any one of a dozen books and magazines such as Nigella Lawson's `Feast' and the November issue of `Martha Stewart Living', I should point out that Ms. Wyler does it for twelve people and a goose rather than a turkey!

And, these are not all simple recipes. This may be a violation of one or more of my criteria, but I like the fact that we get recipes for making our own lasagna noodles and brown goose stock. You don't have to make these, but having the resource to do it is a very good thing (with apologies to Martha).

I am not overly impressed with cookbooks which give extensive do ahead instructions for all their recipes, as Sara Moulton always did on her Food Network Show, `Sara's Secrets'. What good is a three day do ahead cycle, when on the first and second days, you are busy getting dinner on the table for that night, let alone getting ready for the next night's dinner. I'm much happier with Rachael Ray's few tips on fast cooking, even if I never use her recipes. Ms. Wyler also does not limit herself to one or two days advance preparations. Some pantry items can be prepared up to a few months in advance. For pickled dishes, this is great, as it allows you to gather a great crowd together and do your chow-chow or jardiniere off line.

Ms. Wyler gives us menus for thirty-five different events, with some buffets, mostly sit-down dinners, some grilling events, and some breakfasts and brunches. Every menu includes at least a salad, a main course, and a dessert. Many, especially Thanksgiving and buffets include a second main course and several side dishes.

I am a little surprised that the author does not recommend wines for each menu, but you will not miss this unless you MUST have wine at every meal.

THE book about organizing fine dining for many! EXCELLENT!

I absolutely love this book. It is so practical, straight forward, and varied. Whenever I have more than six guests, I turn to this book for great ideas, and fantastic menus carefully planned out for any occasion, as well as any time constraint. Some recipes are complex, others simple, but always the directions are crystal clear. Susan Wyler understands the constraints and the schedule of the modern cook. I highly recommend the Slow Roasted Goose with Pork & Prune Dressing and Port Wine Sauce (I'm making this for Thanksgiving). Other outstanding dishes were the Lamb Shank Cassoulet, the Curried Ginger Carrot Soup, and African Peanut Butter Chicken Stew. And, by the way, I've found myself halving some of these recipes--you don't need a crowd to enjoy these great dishes. So far, each recipe I've tried came out perfectly, but I still have many to wade through. I'm almost looking forward to next Christmas dinner although my entire in-law family will be visiting, driving me crazy. That's how good this book is.

This is a cookbook where the directions are clear, the results sophisticated and delicious and the cook still able to enjoy the party when the festivities begin. Whether the crowd in question fits around the dining room table or spreads out to the backyard patio, the menu suggestions in COOKING FOR A CROWD are imaginative, mouth-watering and fail-proof. This is the kind of cookbook written by someone you wish would invite you over to her own home. Or someone you could---with the help of this book---happily entertain at yours!

The Immacuate Line

I am pleased I added this title to my growing Pamphlet Architecture collection.

In the best of meanings - this book is one that must be read from cover to cover to gain a very precious in-sight to the work of Laura Allen and Mark Smout. Immaculate drawings with detailed modelling combine with clear informative text that describes propositions that are at once both architectonic in mechanised terms whilst exhibiting kinetic and static sculptural intensities.

Another small book that will give plentiful food for thought.

Security of Attachment and the Social Development of Cognition investigates how children's security of attachment in infancy is related to various aspects of their cognitive development over the preschool years. The book thus constitutes an ambitious attempt to build bridges between the domains of social and cognitive development, and as such addresses issues which are of increasing interest to developmental psychologists. In the first two chapters, Meins outlines Bowlby's attachment theory and the research which it has inspired, and develops the theme of a secure attachment relationship providing children with a sense of themselves as effective agents in their interactions with the world (self-efficacy).
The next five chapters describe a longitudinal study of a sample of children whose security of attachment was assessed in infancy. Security-related differences are reported in the areas of object/person permanence, language acquisition, symbolic play, maternal tutoring and theory of mind, but no differences were found in general cognitive ability. Meins argues that the wide-ranging advantages enjoyed by the securely attached children are best explained in terms of their greater self-efficacy and social flexibility, nurtured by a particular kind of early infant-mother interaction.
This book's major contribution is in its approach to explaining why securely attached children may be more self-effective and flexible in social interactions. Meins attempts to account for these differences within a Vygotskian framework, focusing on the secure dyad's greater ability to function within the zone of proximal development. She suggests that a mother's mind-mindedness (the propensity to treat one's infant as an individual with a mind) is an important factor in determining her ability to interact sensitively with her child. In the final chapter, Meins considers how the Vygotskian approach can complement and extend existing theories of attachment, and suggests some ways in which future research might address outstanding questions in this rapidly advancing field.

Glow, Glow Lost, Glow Regained

It is hard to imagine our cities without neon lights; everyone is familiar with the neon glow in the hand-blown glass tubes. They are still around, but they are of another age. In movies, shots of neon signs of nightclubs date the film to the 1930s. Neon was ultramodern, and then became passé, and has now had a boom in nostalgia and avant-garde light art. _Flickering Light: A History of Neon_ (Reaktion Books) by Christoph Ribbat, a professor of American Studies in Germany, explores the use of neon in art and advertising and its surprisingly widespread cultural legacy. Neon is showy, but Ribbat's book (translated from the German by Anthony Mathews) is a sensible and, well, enlightening view of neon's many facets.

The noble gas neon was discovered in 1898, and Parisian chemist Georges Claude found ways to make glowing tubes of it a going commercial concern worldwide. "Cinzano" was spelled out over a Paris roof in 1913; the next year there were 160 neon signs over Paris, and by 1927, over 6,000. In the US, neon started in Los Angeles in 1923 when a car dealer purchased neon signs spelling out "Packard" in Paris for his store back home. It wasn't long before the roofs of service stations and other businesses were sporting neon. Neon crosses were erected over churches. Small businesses in small towns could afford the new signs, and in big cities, there were huge, animated versions. Then the glow faded. Ribbat draws on an astonishingly broad range of neon in popular and artistic culture. He reminds us that in _It's a Wonderful Life_ (1946), when George Bailey gets his vision of Bedford Falls as it would have been if he had never been, it is far from the little town heavily scented with sweet Americana. It is, instead, a riot of neon outside of bars and other stores eager to take the citizens' money. The signs that used to mean good times and modernity and that beckoned with their fashionable glow had instead come to convey sleaze. Neon found a new home in the revitalized Las Vegas, where it can still be found in profusion, although the old neon signs get taken down all the time; the good ones go to the Museum of Neon Art. New Journalist Tom Wolfe was excited by all the glow, describing the colors in the neon palette as "tangerine, broiling magenta, livid pink, incarnadine, fuchsia demure, Congo ruby, methyl green, viridine, aquamarine, phenosafranine, incandescent orange, scarlet-fever purple, cynic blue, tessellated bronze, hospital-fruit-basket orange." There was also a "new sculpture" movement in the sixties and seventies that relied on neon's electric glow. Artists sometimes made pictures with the tubes and sometimes frankly spelled out aphorisms or platitudes the way signs used to advertise beer. Neon, surprisingly, figures strongly in country music, part of the "honky-tonk" scene found in the city. A startling reflection: "There are two genres of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in which neon has really prospered: one is light art, the other is country music."

This sort of synthesis is what Ribbat is good at, calling on connections from Kraftwerk, Nelson Algren, Simon and Garfunkel, Nabokov, Chinatowns, _Blade Runner_, and much more. His chapters are essays on different aspects of the subject, with good illustrations (of which, of course, there ought to be more). Ribbat clearly shares the sentiments of neon fans, such as those in Queens who saved a huge 1936 Pepsi sign when it was dismantled in 2004. They lobbied successfully to have it put on top of a nearby apartment building, just because the glow of the neon meant something to them. Reading the essays here, teasing out all sorts of layers of meaning, that isn't at all surprising.

An extensive history of neon, maybe too extensive...

This is a pretty good book on the history of neon, but includes every possible reference to neon that was ever made in any book which was a little more than I bargained for. It does include information on the inventors of neon signage, and from it's discover as a gas that glows red when electricity arcs through it to it's extensive use in advertising and art. It also has lots of text on books where neon was only mentioned in passing, a lot of which I didn't find very interesting. Still, overall it makes for an ok read.

Okay, but I was rather disappointed.

I'm not sure how to describe this book. You will learn a good deal about neon, but may find it, as I found it, to be somewhat superficial and disappointing. The writing is reasonably good and the illustrations very good.

It does cover something of the discovery of neon as useful lighting. The book considers how neon light and ads have come to characterize a cityscape at night. There are plenty of references to various media, and of course neon is a media in and of itself. It's somehow still enjoyable but not of much substance.

I am used to better books from this publisher.
