About the Author

Sharon F. Rallis is Dwight W. Allen Distinguished Professor of Education Policy and Reform at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Previously, she was professor of education at the University of Connecticut; lecturer on education at Harvard; and associate professor of educational leadership at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. Her doctorate is from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has coauthored numerous books, including several on leadership: Principals of Dynamic Schools: Taking Charge of Change (with Ellen Goldring); Dynamic Teachers: Leaders of Change (with Gretchen Rossman); Leading Dynamic Schools: How to Create and Implement Ethical Policies (with Gretchen Rossman and others); and Leading With Inquiry and Action: How Principals Improve Teaching and Learning (with Matthew Militello and Ellen Goldring). Her numerous articles, book chapters, edited volumes, and technical reports address issues of research and evaluation methodology, ethical practice in research and evaluation, education policy and leadership, and school reform.

A past-president of the American Evaluation Association (2005) and current editor of the American Journal of Evaluation, Professor Rallis has been involved with education and evaluation for more than three decades. She has been a teacher, counselor, principal, researcher, program evaluator, director of a major federal school reform initiative, and an elected school board member. Currently, her teaching includes courses on inquiry, program evaluation, qualitative methodology, and organizational theory. Her research has focused on the local implementation of programs driven by federal, state, or district policies. As external evaluator or principal investigator (PI), she has studied a variety of domestic and international policy and reform efforts, such as alternative professional development for leaders; collaborations between agencies responsible for educating incarcerated or institutionalized youth; initiatives supporting inclusive education for children and youth with disabilities; local school governance and leadership; labor-management relations in school districts; and leadership development. Her work with students on evaluation and qualitative methodology has taken her as far as Afghanistan, Turkey, and Palestine.

Gretchen B. Rossman is Professor of International Education at the Center for International Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She received her PhD in education from the University of Pennsylvania with a specialization in higher education administration. She has served as a visiting professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. Prior to coming to the University of Massachusetts, she was Senior Research Associate at Research for Better Schools in Philadelphia. With an international reputation as a qualitative methodologist, she has expertise in qualitative research design and methods, mixed- methods monitoring and evaluation, and inquiry in education. Over the past 30+ years, she has coauthored numerous books, two of which are editions of major qualitative research texts (this fourth edition of Learning in the Field, with Sharon Rallis, and Designing Qualitative Research, 6th edition, with Catherine Marshall―both widely used guides to qualitative inquiry). She has authored or coauthored more than 45 articles, book chapters, and technical reports focused on methodological issues in qualitative research syntheses, validity in qualitative research, mixed-methods evaluation practice, and ethical research practice, as well as the analysis and evaluation of educational reform initiatives both in the United States and internationally.

Professor Rossman has served as principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on several international projects in such countries as Azerbaijan, India, Malawi, Palestine, Senegal, Tanzania, and the Gambia, as well as external evaluator on several domestic projects, including a Department of Education–funded reform initiative, a National Science Foundation–funded middle-grades science initiative, and a number of projects implementing more inclusive practices for students with disabilities. She regularly presents papers at the annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association and the Comparative and International Education Society. 

Casey Cobb is Associate Professor of Education Policy and Director of the Center for Education Policy Analysis at the University of Connecticut. His current research interests include policies on accountability, school choice, and bilingual education, where he examines the implications for equity among historically marginalized populations. He teaches courses in policy studies, research methods and evaluation. Casey has also served as evaluator on several projects, most recently working with the Connecticut Department of Education to study inter-district magnet programs.

Timothy Reagan is currently Visiting Professor of Educational Leadership at Central Connecticut State University. He has previously been a faculty member at Galluadet University, Central Connecticut State University, the University of Connecticut, Roger Williams University, and the University of the Witwatersrand. He has also served as the Associate Dean of the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut, Dean of the School of Education at Roger Williams University, and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand. His areas of interest include educational policy studies and the education of cultural and linguistic minority groups. Reagan co-authored Becoming a Reflective Educator: How to Build a Culture of Inquiry in the Schools, another Corwin Press book that contributes to the authors’ illustration of leadership in dynamic schools.

Aaron M. Kuntz is Assistant Professor of Qualitative Research Methodology at the University of Alabama. His research interests include social contexts of education, organizational culture, qualitative inquiry, identity theory, and democracy within the academy. Recently, he cotaught a course introducing inquiry to doctoral students with Rallis and Rossman.

I was a student of Dr. Lien's this past spring at the University of Utah and I have to say she does a wonderful job with the material. She made us buy her book as one of the required texts for the class which I normally frown upon but the concise and clear, yet interesting information in the book itself combined with Dr. Lien's classes were excellent. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the field of Asian American Studies.

Simply a treasure!

This is a concise, yet thorough explanation of what the author calls "modern" lace knitting. (She contrasts "modern" with the very elaborate lace of previous centuries.) All of the patterns are stunningly beautiful, and not very difficult (as lace knitting goes). The patterns are primarily for doilies and tablecloths; there is also one set of curtains and a bedspread. They could pretty easily be adapted for other purposes, and she gives some guidelines for doing so. Certainly any of the larger ones could be used for shawls. I highly recommend this gem if you have any interest in lace knitting. (Can't wait to get her second book, too!) Thanks to Dover for continuing to publish these treasures!

Bitten by the lace bug? Here's a book you will just love

I adore this book. It isn't hard to find lace patterns where I live (Europe) We have issues of knitted lace patterns on the newstands everywhere. But these patterns are just, well, WOW. The floral centers of the round knits are much more "realistic" and beautiful than the average doily.
Now, you can make doilies and tablecloths if you like from these patterns, but you can also make them in a fine laceweight wool yarn and have a shawl that is absolutely stunning. The cover picture pattern actually would make an incredible wedding veil/shawl from very fine silk or merino wool yarn. And a baby christening blanket from one of these patterns would become a family heirloom (I've given handknitted gifts to my friends with new babies, and one of them washed the item and shrink-wrapped it so his son will have it when he grows up.)
This is NOT a book for beginners; if you haven't done lace knitting before, you should probably start with another book (I like Martha Waterman's book on lace shawls.) But after you get the hang of knitting lace, this book will feed the lace fever. It is a treasure.

Treasure Found!

After almost giving up in despair, I found a copy of this book in our local library (pop or 3200) and found myself in lace knitting (or is it knitted lace?) heaven. Explanations are simple and concise, as are both diagrams and charts. I adapted one of the smaller patterns using overlocking thread and size 1.50mm needles and made a 4ft sq tablecloth as my son's wedding gift. It took approx 285 hours, but it was magnificent (even went through MY wedding ring and I'm 5ft! If you can knit, purl, make 1, then this is the book for you to enter the realm of fantasy.

About the Author
Mick Coleman (Ph.D., The University of Georgia), Professor at The University of Georgia, retired from the Department of Human Development and Family Science in 2012.  Dr. Coleman's book originated from his involvement in an interdisciplinary teacher training program at the University of Georgia. His duties in this program included teaching the course "Families, Schools and Communities" and supervising student teachers in the public schools. Dr. Coleman has published journal articles, books and training manuals related to family-teacher partnerships.  He has also made presentations on this topic at regional, national and international meetings.

Geoff Goodman, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Psychology, Long Island University, and holds adjunct faculty positions at Columbia University and Weill Medical College of Cornell University.  He is an advanced candidate in the child and adult programs at the Psychoanalytic Institute of the New York Freudian Society.

Important extension of attachment theory

The Internal World and Attachment by Geoff Goodman (Analytic Press) Today no thoughtful clinician denies the importance of attachment motivation and attachment patterns throughout the life cycle, and no serious theorist omits attachment from the catalogue of clinically important motivations. Yet, clinicians facing the multiplicity of wishes, fantasies, and conflicts reported by their patients typically find a guiding focus on attachment security inadequate to the complexities of therapeutic work. How, asks Geoff Goodman in The Internal World and Attachment, can we progress further in integrating the fruits of attachment research with the accumulated clinical wisdom of psychoanalytic theorizing about the internal world of object representations? The key, he answers, is to look more closely at the basic assumptions of each body of theory, especially those assumptions, whether embedded or explicit, that bear on the formation of psychic structure.
Taking his cue from the contributions of Kernberg, Fonagy, Lieberman, Silverman, and others, Goodman argues that contemporary object relations theory, with its emphasis on object representations organized within a psychic structure, can be profitably integrated with attachment theory's Internal Working Models, with their emphasis on external reality and defensive exclusion. About the Author
Margaret Thombs is an associate professor of education specializing in instructional technology at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. She has taught secondary mathematics and computer science and was formerly the director of technology for the Middletown, Rhode Island Public Schools. Her areas of expertise include facilitating English as a Second Language skills using technology and technology-enabled family and local history research. She is a frequent presenter at national and regional technology and education conferences, and has authored a number of articles on technology integration in the classroom. She earned her PhD in computing technology in education from Nova Southeastern University.

Maureen Gillis is the owner of an Internet-based business and the coordinating editor for Spalding University’s manuscript review program for MFA alumni in Louisville, Kentucky. Prior to becoming a writer and Internet entrepreneur, she was a CPA and business executive and taught in the MBA program at the University of Hartford. She serves as the writing coach for the management team of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Gillis earned her MFA in writing from Spalding University and has taught in that program.

Alan Canestrari
Alan S. Canestrari, Ed.D, Boston University, a veteran social studies practitioner and Professor of Education at Roger Williams University, is co-editor (with Bruce Marlowe) of Educational Foundations: An Anthology of Critical Readings (Sage) and Educational Psychology in Context: Readings for Future Teachers (Sage). Educational Foundations was awarded the 2005 American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Award. Canestrari had a long career in public schools and universities as a history teacher, department chair, adjunct professor at Rhode Island College, and mentor in the Brown University Masters of Teaching Program. He was the RI Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 1992.
