The WTI incinerator in East Liverpool burns 60,000 tons of hazardous waste each year, has experienced dozens of accidents, and is located within 100 yards of an elementary school. Yet, it continues to operate.

 

Toxic Burn is a gripping account of the activist movement against the imposing WTI incinerator in this struggling rust belt town. Drawing on personal interviews with key participants as well as official documents, Thomas Shevory tells the story of building, maintaining, and resisting the incinerator. It begins in the 1970s with community leaders who responded to failing pottery and steel industries by proposing the incinerator as a source of jobs and tax revenue. The incinerator’s opponents fought back, challenging EPA permits in court. They also enlisted the support of Greenpeace and publicly called presidential hopeful Al Gore to task for the Clinton administration’s backing of the incinerator. These activists’ efforts have not only helped to curtail the industry’s expansion, Shevory concludes, but have also encouraged movement toward more sustainable models of industrial production.

 

Hazardous waste disposal is a hot-button issue in many communities. By analyzing the obstacles faced by the WTI incinerator’s opponents, as well as their victories, Toxic Burn shows that the actions of decent and determined citizens are powerful and essential to developing new environmental models and ultimately saving the health and lives of those in the path of potential disaster.

Much Needed

An up to date Methodist catechesis is much needed for a generation that is both theologically and biblically illiterate. There are thirty questions regarding what Christians believe and what Christians do, thirty answers, with an appendix including the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Apostle's Creed.

Arnold Sommerfeld (1868-1951) belongs with Max Planck (1858-1947), Albert Einstein (1879-1955) and Niels Bohr (1885-1962) among the founders of modern theoretical physics, a science that developed into a budding discipline during his lifetime. Sommerfeld witnessed many of the most dramatic scientific, cultural and political events of this era. His correspondence with his family offers a vivid testament to the challenges and joys of a life in science.

This biography attempts to reconstruct Sommerfeld’s life and work not only from the perspective of his achievements in theoretical physics but also with the goal of portraying the career of a scientist within the social and political environment in which it evolved. It is based to a large extent on Sommerfeld’s voluminous correspondence, which sheds light both on his private and scientific life. Furthermore, it provides an authentic view on the circumstances that shaped Sommerfeld’s career in different places – Königsberg, Göttingen, Clausthal, Aachen, Munich – and in different institutional and disciplinary settings – mineralogy, mathematics, engineering, physics. Although this biography is not a study of Sommerfeld’s school, it also renders transparent what made this group of physicists so unique and gave its founder the aura of a charismatic teacher. This becomes particularly evident in the reverence with which he was received by his hosts during his travels all over the world – travels that Sommerfeld perceived as cultural missions. International politics, personal zeal and scientific interests became closely entangled at such occasions. Such an entanglement is by no means uncommon in the history of science – but it is rarely observed so persistently as in Sommerfeld’s case.

About the Author
Michael Eckert studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and received his Ph.D in theoretical physics from the University of Bayreuth in 1979. He has dedicated his career to the history of physics. Since 1981, Dr. Eckert has been engaged in several projects on the history of modern physics at the Deutsches Museum, Munich. He has authored and co-authored books and articles on such diverse specialties as the history of solid state physics, plasma physics, and fluid dynamics. This biography is the culmination of a long historical research endeavor on Arnold Sommerfeld at the Deutsches Museum that has included the editing of Sommerfeld's scientific correspondence in two volumes (2000 and 2004).

The life of a pioneer of modern theoretical physics

Eckert's book represents the first biography of the great physicist Arnold Sommerfeld (1868-1951), a pioneer of modern physics that established his school of theoretical physics in Munich at the beginning of the 20-th century. Readers will be interested to learn that Sommerfeld was trained in mathematics and worked with Felix Klein in Gottingen, the world's center of mathematics during the first half of the 20-th century. In his early career as mathematician, he constructed the harmonic analyzer, an instrument used in the calculation of the amplitudes of a Fourier series, and cultivated a strong interest in mathematical physics (or physical mathematics, as written inside the book). In chapter 1, is shown an interesting picture with the young Sommerfeld nearby the analyzer however details about the working of the instruments are not given. A characteristic of Eckert's book is that about half of the text appears inside quotations " " and is concerned with the words written by Sommerfeld and other personalities in their correspondences. If, on the one side, this brings on the surface the original words of the protagonists, on the other it makes the reading less smooth that of a plain biography.
An important aspect that has been left out from the book is the correspondence concerned with the great joy that Sommerfeld must had felt when his former students (Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, and Peter Debye) were awarded the Nobel prize (Heisenberg and Pauli received the physics prize in 1932 and 1945, respectively, while Debye received the chemistry prize in 1936 - Hans Bethe, also a former student of Sommerfeld, received the physics prize in 1967, sixteen years after his mentor passed away).
In spite of the above shortcomings, this biography is very worth reading not only for understanding the outstanding scientific contributions of Sommerfeld (among them the fine-structure constant, alpha) and his pupils but also for understanding the environment and people that surrounded him in a period that covers two world wars. Particularly interesting are the sections related to the scientific trips that Sommerfeld made in India, Japan, and the United States. A book that complements Eckert's biography is Suman Seth's book Crafting the Quantum: Arnold Sommerfeld and the Practice of Theory, 1890-1926, published in 2010.

Wow! I really don't know where to begin. Everything about this story was just awesome. Don't let the cover fool you! This story is addicting! I seriously had to lock my kindle in the other room to stop reading while I did my chores... and the entire time ii was cleaning I was thinking about the story! Then, as soon as I finished I raced back to my kindle to finish! I couldn't help it!

This story is seriously packin some heat with sexy vamp cowboys! Yes, I'll repeat that slower. Vampire Cowboys... that are steaming-ly sexy... :D

First off, before I really begin, let me just say that I totally want a Raf of my own... and don't want to share him with anyone! He's the perfect best friend/boyfriend, well except he likes other guys... which makes us perfect! We can stare at guys together! *coughs*

Anyways!

This is the first book I've ever read by the other and I was blown away by the original and intense plot line. I have already added the rest of her books to my TBR list on goodreads.

This book is jam packed with sensual sex, addictive vampire, witches, cats and an adorable doxen you will fall in love with. This book had me literally turning the pages faster and faster as I read. Wanting... no Needing to know what happens next!

This book is so well done with the amount of details that I could see it being the next blockbuster film! The characters are so well done that I could be friends with all of them! I could totally relate to Connie, the author kept it real and didn't sugar coat anything! I don't have even one problem with this highly addictive book!

The author didn't leave anything out of this spectacular book that I highly recommend to anyone and everyone! Fan of vampires or not! Everyone should own this book! What are you waiting for?

This was soooo good! I loved the characters. Connie has a delightful sense of humor or maybe it's the author's. It gave me several chuckles.

Okay, it's about a girl who lives in a world (current Arkansas) where vampires are an everyday occurrence.
They're out of the closet. Perhaps, out of the shadows would be a better description. One of the richest, most handsome and sexy vamps is Tom. Tom owns a tanning salon for vampires and humans. Connie goes to work at the salon. Tom's best friend is Raf. He is also a vampire but, of the gay persuasion. Connie, needs a place to live that is closer to work, so she moves in with Tom and Raf.

This is mainly Connie's and Tom's love story. There is some mystery thrown in.
Oh yes, Connie has a disabled wiener dog who is not sure if he likes vampires or not.

This book was fun. I really enjoyed it. I am so glad it has a happy ending.

P.S. This would be such a cute movie.

Enjoyable with interesting plotline

MIDNIGHT SUN, INC. by Debbie Vaughn is a fun read that will keep you fascinated. I give it three stars for its compelling plotline and hope this is only the first book in a series.

MIDNIGHT SUN, INC. tells the tale of how human Connie Bennett and her boss, vampire Tom Thornton, fell in love. The book is set in a world where vampires have come out of the coffin, and legislation and commerce cater to vampires as well as humans. Tom Thornton owns Midnight Sun, a tanning salon that caters to "all persuasions." The night manager, Rafael, is also a vampire, or is he? Connie becomes housemates with Rafael, who it turns out also lives with Tom.

As Connie gets to know Rafael and begins a romantic relationship with Tom, the three of them have to deal with strange events, a dead body in the salon's dumpster, spells on the tanning salon, revelations about Rafael's life, and Connie's odd health issues.

I enjoyed MIDNIGHT SUN, INC. The plotline is interesting and keeps you wondering what could happen next. The narration and dialogue are filled with humor and wit. I found myself laughing out loud several times.

A few issues detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I would have liked the pacing to be better. It seemed a bit off, as there was too much time spent on transitional and background scenes, and too little on the major plot and climactic scenes. The same applies to the development of the romantic relationship between Connie and Tom. That part of the plotline was a bit unbelievable and needed some extra attention.

The book also needed another round of editing. The typo and grammatical errors were distracting, and at times the storyline was a tad confusing. These issues can be overlooked, though, because the paranormal aspects of the book were so interesting.

Given the adult content, this book has a heat level rating of 3, appropriate for those 18 years of age and over.

MIDNIGHT SUN, INC is a fun read, and I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy the paranormal genre.

Der Erinnerungszeitraum erstreckt sich von ca. 1900 bis 1970. Die Gespräche widerspiegeln beinahe ein Jahrhundert schweizerische Sozialgeschichte aus der Perspektive einer mehrheitlich armen Gesellschaftsschicht. Die Kurzporträts illustrieren auch die ärmlichen Lebensbedingungen, in denen viele Schweizerinnen und Schweizer noch bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein lebten.
Inhalt des Buches sind 40 Lebensausschnitte von ehemaligen Verdingkindern. Sie werden ergänzt durch Texte zu den Themenblöcken: Historische Erinnerungsforschung, Armut, Gesetzliche Entwicklung, Fremdplatzierung und ihre Gründe, Schule, Widerstand - Flucht - Glück, Entwurzelung - Isolation - Schweigen, Diskriminierung, Gewalt und ihre Folgen.
Ergänzt wird der Band mit zahlreichen Fotos von Paul Senn (1901-1953), dessen Bilder von Benachteiligten und Randständigen - auch Verdingkindern - längst zur Legende geworden sind. Auf dem Umschlag: Verdingmädchen, Kanton Bern, 1940.

Alberto Faccini es graduado en Letras y, durante muchos años, ha sido director del Centro Educativo Argonne, en Milán, una labor promovida por los padres de los alumnos y perteneciente a la Asociación Faes. En el mismo instituto ha sido profesor de Lengua, se ha encargado de la coordinación del departamento de Proyectos Educativos y ha sido el responsable del área de tutorías. Durante muchos años, tanto en Roma como en Nápoles o Milán, se ha dedicado al tutoring y a la orientación de adolescentes. Actualmente es profesor del colegio Braida en Verona.
