A Great Taoist Work

The Lieh Tzu is the one of the less known Taoist classics, yet perhaps the most accessable and enjoyable one. It's a collection of 111 stories said to be by the noted scholar Leih-Tzu around the fourth century BCE. (Who's it really by? Who knows? And who cares?)
The stories cover a variety of topics, such as choosing what is important, how to lead a group of people, archery, choosing ones targets well, Confucius, why one chooses to be a Taoist, and much more.
My favorite quote is "Enlightenment is a very normal experience, attainable by everyone. Therefore, there is nothing mysterious or secretive about it."
A simply wonderful, tranquil book that is enjoyable to read and contemplate.

Great material, but --

Lao Tzu, the first author of Taoism, described abstruse, metaphorical scenes in abstruse language. Chuang Tzu uses prosaic descriptions, but still described philosophical ideal rather than gritty facts. Lieh Tzu came later. He used prosaic words to describe prosaic, everyday scenes, and to find enlightenment in them.

Many ring true for me. The "yellow mare" reminded me of a technician who was finely attuned to the circuits we used. He was always wrong in his diagnosis onf the problems he showed me. That never mattered. He was always right in pointing out that there was a problem, often based on small clues that I might have missed.

Lieh discusses honesty and friendship, poverty and happiness, great riches and death. Still, the language is always modern and clear, and a good supplement to Chuang and Lao.

My problem, though, is that this isn't a translation. It's Wong's interpretation. She says, early on, "Instead of a straight translation of the sematics of the text, I have decided to present the 'voice' of Lieh Tzu." As much as I like Wong's text, it troubles me. Translation is never exact, but there are degrees of inexactness. I am concerned about how much Lieh's text has suffered.

This is good anyway, and I'll probably come back to it eve if I find a more scholarly Lieh Tzu. This is readable and thought-provoking, no matter what it's authenticity.

A well-kept secret of Taoist wisdom.

This book, unlike the more well known works by Lao-Tse and Chuang-Tse, is mostly made up of stories, and is very well suited to children. I read my library's copy, and I wish I could buy a copy to keep for myself, and for my children someday. It is an immensely comforting and wise text we owe to Lieh-Tse, a Taoist master who lived about two centuries after Lao-Tse.

I pack it on all my trips however brief

I love this little book. It is a great read. And brilliantly helpful. The author's stories are sprinkled throughout and they are both instructive and memorable. I use natural solutions where possible and this book is incredibly helpful in this regard. I have been able to avoid a multitude of pharmaceuticals for all kinds of complaints. I pack it on all my trips however brief!

Don't let its diminutive size fool you, it has become my most valuable travel tool!

I met Susan Kramer this summer at a Georgia Herbalist Guild meeting and purchased her book directly, wanting to support someone in the community and curious about its contents. I travel out of state monthly to attend an herb school program, so a week after getting this book I popped it into my travel bag and read it on the bus trip there. This is NOT a stuffy guidebook, The Naturally Healthy Traveler almost reads like an intimate travel journal, showing us the nitty-gritty details in stories of her personal experiences from her many trips and how to plan ahead to have remedies on hand or the know-how if you are in these instances. Her personality and humour really shine in this little tome! At only 4 by 6 inches, its something that can easily fit inside a cargo pant pocket... and is exactly how I travel with it.

Now, I didn't expect to actually use TNHT as much as I did so readily. I have quite a few books in my repertoire, but I took to this one like a green hornworm to a tomato. That very first weekend, I was in 3 instances where I used advice from the book under Motion Sickness, Stiffness, and Constipation. Where this book shined most for me however was when I traveled to another time zone, and the advice under the Jet Lag, Dehydration, & Food sections saved me immensely! Typically during a trip I feel some kind of weakness and fatigue, this is probably the only time that I can recall where I did not get that at all, even after I returned I adjusted flawlessly to my own zone without a hitch.

You don't realize how valuable it can be until you are in one of these situations wishing you knew what to do when you come to the epiphany that this thing is literally in your pocket. I appreciate its ease of use; Susan doesn't talk down to us with complicated jargon but in an unpretentious approachable way, however its diminutive size is really the factor that keeps me coming back to it. How often does such a valuable resource take up such little space? Especially when traveling, a full size book is NOT practical and is awkward to carry around.

I always keep The Naturally Healthy Traveler close-by whenever I go places because you never know what you could run into on the road less traveled. :)

In Having A Life: Self Pathology After Lacan, Lewis Kirshner takes this Lacanian question as the point of departure for a thoughtful meditation on the conceptual problems and clinical manifestations of pathologies of the self.

Beginning with the case of Margaret Little, analyzed by D. W. Winnicott, and proceeding to extended case presentations from his own practice, Kirshner weaves together an avowedly American reading of Lacan with the approaches to self pathology of an influential coterie of theorists. By drawing out common threads in their respective discourses on the self, Kirshner achieves an original integration of Lacanian theory with other contemporary approaches to self pathology. Of special note is his ability to sustain a dialogue between Lacan and Kohut, whose shared clinical object, discernible through divergent vocabularies and conceptions, is the struggle of the subject to avoid fragmentation that would obliterate a sense of aliveness and preclude active engagement with the world.

Kirshner's opening chapter on the gifted, troubled Margaret Little and his concluding chapter on the eminent political philosopher Louis Althusser, whose self pathology culminated in his strangling of his wife, Hélène Rytman, in 1980, frame a study that is brilliantly successful in bringing "self" issues down to the messy actualities of lived experience. Analytic therapists no less than students of the human sciences will be edified by this cogent, readable attempt to infuse Lacanian concepts with the conceptual rigor and clinical pragmatism of American psychoanalysis and to apply the resulting model of therapeutic action to a fascinating range of case material.

A well-written, original contribution to contemporary psychoanalytic writing, focusing on the lack of a sense of self. The book looks at identity in symbolic terms and finds a kind of weak redemption possible -- the triumph of Kohut, ultimately, over Lacan (though the latter doesn't get short shrift, even if his theories seem underintegrated at times). The writing is clear and compassionate; only the final chapter on Althusser seems underimagined.

About the Author
Dr Clive Handler BSc, MD, MRCP, FACC, FESC is an Honorary Consultant in the National Pulmonary Hypertension Unit at The Royal Free Hospital, London and Consultant Cardiologist at Highgate Hospital, London. He was previously Consultant Cardiologist at Northwick Park and St Marya (TM)s Hospitals, London. He trained at Guya (TM)s Hospital Medical School and at St Lukea (TM)s Hospital Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin. His textbook "Cardiology in Primary Care," was published by Radcliffe Publishing in 2004. He co-edited "Classic Papers in Coronary Angioplasty" with Dr Michael Cleman from Yale University Medical School (Springer) and edited "Guya (TM)s Hospital a" 250 years" in 1975. His forthcoming books include "Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Primary Care" and Management of Cardiac Problems in Primary Care" (both written with Dr Gerry Coghlan and published by Radcliffe Publishing) and is co-editor of "Vascular Complications in Human Disease: mechanisms and consequences" (Springer). His has written numerous scientific papers.

Dr Gerry Coghlan MD, FRCP is Consultant Cardiologist and Director of the National Pulmonary Hypertension Unit at the Royal Free Hospital. He trained in Dublin and at Harefield and the Royal Free Hospitals. He is an international authority on Pulmonary Hypertension but has wide interests in all aspects of the management of coronary heart disease and angioplasty. He has written several books with Dr Clive Handler as well as scientific papers on pulmonary hypertension and other aspects of cardiology.

Steven R. Smith, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Smith is a trained child and adolescent psychotherapist and has extensive experience in both assessment research and practice. He completed his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Arkansas before internship and postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. After training, he remained on staff at Massachusetts General Hospital as a child psychotherapist and consultation neuropsychologist.
As a young researcher, Dr. Smith has amassed a number of publications related to behavioral, neuropsychological, and personality assessment. In 2001, he was awarded the Walter Klopfer award from the Society for Personality Assessment for outstanding contribution to the empirical literature. SPA presented him the Anne and Samuel Beck Award for outstanding early career research in personality assessment for 2005. He has recently developed a model of collaborative (therapeutic) neuropsychological assessment and much of his current work explores the relationship between traditional personality assessment and neuropsychology.
Leonard Handler, Ph.D., ABAP is Professor and Associate Director of the Clinical Training Program at the University of Tennessee. Over the past 40 years he has taught assessment to almost 900 graduate students and is a frequent contributor to various clinical journals, especially "Journal of Personality Assessment." Dr. Handler is on the Editorial Board of "JPA"; he is co-editor of the Case Study Section of the Journal. He has been a member of two APAcommittees that deal with assessment, and has been the recipient of awards for his research from the University and from the Tennessee Psychological Association. He also served as Director of the University of Tennessee Psychological Clinic. Dr. Handler is Past-President of the Society for Personality Assessment, co-editor of a text on assessment, "Teaching and Learning Personality Assessment," and is completing a text on therapeutic assessment for children and adolescents for Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. He is a fellow of APA, in Division 12, Division of Clinical Psychology. Dr. Handler holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Assessment Psychology.

The next-generation of wireless communications are envisioned to be supported by heterogeneous networks by using various wireless access technologies. The popular cellular networks and wireless local area networks (WLANs) present perfectly complementary characteristics in terms of service capacity, mobility support, and quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning. The cellular/WLAN interworking is an effective way to promote the evolution of wireless networks. Interworking of Wireless LANs and Cellular Networks focuses on three aspects, namely access selection, call admission control and load sharing to investigate heterogeneous interworking for cellular/WLAN integrated networks. It not only reveals important observations but also offers useful tools for performance evaluation. The unique traffic and network characteristics are exploited to enhance interworking effectiveness. Theoretical analysis and simulation validation demonstrate benefits of cellular/WLAN interworking in real networks. Last but not the least, this brief highlights promising future research directions to guide interested readers.
