About the Author

Dr Jason Hall (editor) studied Pharmacy at the University of Strathclyde, before completing an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy at Liverpool John Moores University and a PhD in non-medical prescribing at the University of Manchester. He has worked in community pharmacy for five years, in the NHS as a pharmaceutical adviser for two years and in a further education college teaching chemistry and pharmaceutical science to pharmacy technicians and science students for five years. Jason joined the School of Pharmacy in Manchester in 1999 and is now Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning. Research interests include non-medical prescribing, professional identity and professionalism in pharmacy students.

Dr Chris Rostron (series editor) graduated in Pharmacy from Manchester University and completed a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry at Aston University. He gained Chartered Chemist status in 1975. After a period of post-doctoral research he was appointed as a lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry at Liverpool Polytechnic. He is now an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University. He was a member of the Academic Pharmacy Group Committee of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and chairman for the past 5 years. He is currently chairman of the Academic Pharmacy Forum and deputy chair of the Education Expert Advisory Panel of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He is an external examiner in Medicinal Chemistry at a number of Schools of Pharmacy both in the UK and abroad. In 2008 he was awarded honorary membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain for services to Pharmacy education.

In so doing, the book demonstrates the range of thought that qualifies as theorizing in the contemporary study of the mechanisms of adaptive behavior. It has two purposes: to bring together a very wide range of approaches in one place and to give authors space to explain how their ideas developed. Journal literature often presents fully-formed theories with no explanation of how an idea came to have the shape in which it is presented. In this volume, however, leaders in different fields provide background on the development of their ideas. Where once psychologists and a few zoologists had this field to themselves, now various types of computer scientists have added great energy to the mix.

El distanciamiento español de Japón cuando terminó el ciclo de victorias militares del imperio -Franco inclusó llegó a especular con una declaración de guerra en marzo de 1945, que rechazaron los aliados- sirvió de ensayo al régimen para la previsible ruptura con Alemania e Italia y el acercamiento a los Aliados.
La característica fundamental de los contactos es que, a diferencia de los que mantenía el régimen con Alemania y Italia, nunca se desarrollaron bajo el signo de la afinidad cultural e ideológica, sino sólo como alianza utilitaria. Por eso para Franco -que creía que la derrota de Japón era consecuencia de la incapacidad de los orientales para acceder a la civilización- la ruptura no fue difícil.

Fascinating and informative

"Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture," by Carol Padden and Tom Humphries, is a well-written, consistently interesting look at Deaf lives and communities. The introduction notes that both authors are deaf, so this book is very much written from the perspective of insiders. The copyright page notes that the book has a copyright date of 1988 and was in its 12th printing in 2000.
Although relatively short (134 + vii pages), this book is packed full of information. Among the topics covered: the difference between being "deaf" (lowercase) and "Deaf" (capitalized), the origins of American Sign Language, Deaf theater and poetry, the work of Deaf filmmaker Charles Krauel, controversies within the Deaf world, and more.
The authors maintain that Deaf people have an authentic language and culture. The book is lively and intelligent. I recommend that readers of this book also view the fascinating documentary film "Sound and Fury."

good, quick, anecdotal intro to Deaf culture

this book is exactly as the title of the review states. It is one that you can fly through and get a good introduction into the ideas of Deaf culture. Early it explains the concepts of deaf and Deaf and it is filled with good anecdotes and a broad range of topics. While it doesn't offer too much for those with knowledge of Deaf culture and cultural issues, it does provide a great start for those that want to learn a little about Deaf culture and will offer a jumping off point for beginners. Because of it being a quick read and many good tales, for those with a strong knowledge of Deaf culture, it certainly offers a light and fast read.

Waste of money. $46 for an 82 page book. Don't waste your money. It's not groundbreaking work. If you need it, rent it from a library. It's a ripoff.

His writings on Noh were originally secret teachings that were later coveted among the highest ranks of the samurai class and first became available to the general public only in the twentieth century. The Fushikaden is the best known of Zeami’s writings on Noh and it provides practical instruction for actors, gives valuable teachings on the aesthetics and spiritual culture of Japan, and offers a philosophical outlook on life.

Along with the Fushikaden, translator William Scott Wilson includes a comprehensive introduction describing the intriguing history behind this enigmatic and influential art form, and also a new translation of one of Zeami’s most moving plays, Atsumori.

About the Author

Mary K. Stohr  is a Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. She received a PhD (1990) in political science, with specializations in criminal justice and public administration, from Washington State University. Many moons ago, and before she earned her graduate degrees, she worked as a correctional officer and then as a counselor in an adult male prison in Washington State. Professor Stohr has published over 80 academic works in the areas of correctional organizations and operation, correctional personnel, inmate needs and assessment, program evaluation, gender, and victimization. Her books, with others, include The American Prison (with Cullen and Jonson); Corrections: The Essentials (with Walsh); Correctional Assessment, Casework and Counseling (with Walsh); Corrections: A Text Reader (with Walsh and Hemmens); Criminal Justice Management: Theory and Practice in Justice Centered Organizations (with Collins); and The Prison Experience (with Hemmens). She is the Executive Director of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, received the Founders Award from ACJS in 2009, and is a Co-Founder of the Corrections Section of ACJS.

Anthony Walsh, Professor of Criminology at Boise State University, received his PhD from Bowling Green State University at the ripe old age of 43. He has field experience in law enforcement and corrections. He is the author of over 150 journal articles/book chapters and 34 books, including Biology and Criminology (Routledge, 2009), Feminist Criminology Through a Biosocial Lens (Carolina Academic Press, 2011), Law, Justice, and Society (with Craig Hemmens, Oxford University Press, 2011), Correctional Assessment, Casework, and Counseling (with Mary K. Stohr, American Correctional Association, 2011), The Neurobiology of Criminal Behavior: Gene-Brain-Culture Interaction (with Jon Bolen, Ashgate, 2012), Corrections: The Essentials (with Mary K. Stohr, SAGE, 2012), The Science Wars: The Politics of Gender and Race (Transaction, 2013), Criminological Theory: Assessing Philosophical Assumptions (Anderson/Elsevier, 2014), Biosociology: Bridging the Biology-Sociology Divide (Transaction, 2014), and Criminology: The Essentials (Sage, 2015). His interests include the biosocial criminology, statistics, and criminal justice assessment and counseling.

Craig Hemmens is Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. In addition to being the editor for the SAGE Text/Reader Series in Criminology/Criminal Justice, he has published several books, including Law, Justice and Society (Oxford University Press, ©2012), Legal Guide for Police (Anderson, ©2011) and An Introduction to Criminal Evidence (Oxford University Press, ©2009). He holds a J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. He served as the President of the Association of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) from 2012 to 2013.

The book is good. Gives good historical information for corrections. However, there is a need for more up to date and realistic information on some of the "out sourced" private corrections.

I used this text in the first edition for the "Punishment & Corrections" class I teach at a local college. It has relevant research articles at the end of each chapter - easier for the students to find articles for papers.

David Bergman is Professor of English at Towson University and the author or editor of more than twenty books, including Gaiety Transfigured: Gay Self-Representation in American Literature and The Violet Hour: The Violet Quill and the Making of Gay Culture. He is also the editor of John Ashbery's Reported Sightings and The Violet Quill Reader. Bergman has won the Lambda Literary Prize for Men on Men 2000 and the George Elliston Poetry Prize for Cracking the Code, the first of four books of poetry. "Humm?" I thought as I looked at the page count of the final draft of Sustainable Design-A Critical Guide just published by Princeton Architectural Press and written by my friend and colleague David Bergman, "I wonder how much meat is left?" I'd seen earlier versions and began reading with a bit of uncertainty.

As I finished the first chapter, my questions were answered and I felt both relieved and energized. David had been able to distill topics that get those of us in the trenches blabbing on for hours into concise statements of fact and reason WITH wonderful illustrations, stunning photographs and concrete examples of what works and what doesn't. All of this wrapped up in a beautifully designed and superbly edited volume that is a must-have reference manual for long time sustainability experts and newcomers alike.

This book is much more than a "How To" for Sustainable Design, although it certainly should be used for this purpose. From Site Issues to Eco-Measuring and Labeling, it offers opportunities at each step to implement the 4th R of Environmentalism (reduce, reuse & recycle) - "Re-think" the way we approach every aspect of a project. Each of the ten chapters offers in depth studies on historical practice and practical examples of successful application along with commentary that empowers the reader to continue further exploration of each topic.

As I continued to read, I found that all of my "pet peeves" about Sustainable Design, Environmentalism, LEED, and Greenwash had been addressed and summed up in the last chapter, The Future of Sustainable Design. In this chapter, David speaks about his vision of "Transparent Green", a scenario where "Green" is an integral part of the thinking-design process from the start and not an add-on, after thought or "statement" of any kind.

In the year 1 B.C. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio wrote The 10 Books on Architecture. These volumes outlined every consideration and step required to build a successful project that would be sensitive to the land, it's occupants and more importantly one that would endure the tests of time. After finishing Sustainable Design-A Critical Guide and closing the cover, my final thoughts were, "Vitruvius sure would be proud"!

Beautiful, clearly written, MUST READ book

Anyone living in the 21st century understands, intuitively, that the quality of our lives is intimately affected by not only the quality of the air we breathe outdoors but how
well we can live our lives inside our homes, where more and more people are now able not only to eat, sleep and relax -- the traditional purposes of a home -- but to work, as well.

This book is the stunning creation of a master teacher who can communicate with fellow citizens (like me) who are not expert in the fields he knows so well.

I have a far deeper appreciation of the importance of lighting and carbon footprints, and so many other contemporary issues than I did before reading this lustrous book. Beautifully conceived, written and illustrated.

A must-read for every citizen of the 21st century.

Very good overview of a complex topic.

Having read and commented on an early version of the book I was excited to pick up the published work to see if it had fulfilled the promise of the early draft. I am happy to report that it did. This book delivers what it promises, an overview of how to make our built environment a sustainable one, appropriate for students, professionals, and lay people with an interest in the topic. I found it to be a well written, well illustrated and comprehensive review of the state of the art of sustainability. David Bergman's guidance through the large array of possibilities and the sometimes complex tradeoffs that are required is succinct and upbeat. Those seeking a detailed how to understanding of technologies and possibilities for the built environment will not find that here, but that is not the books intent. What is promised and delivered is a solid overview that will make a good foundation for more detailed exploration. A valuable addition to the library of any student or professional interested in developing a sustainable practice.

When the rebellion of 1916 had ended, more than 400 people were dead and over 2,000 wounded. More than half of these were civilians, but even for those civilians who were not direct casualties, the rising was one of the most momentous experiences of their lives. The accounts that Mick O'Farrell has collected come from letters, diaries, extracts from otherwise unrelated biographies, and contemporary magazine and newspaper articles.

Some common themes are present in the accounts. For instance, a fear of going hungry, which resulted in constant, and dangerous, attempts to stock up with supplies. There was also a grim realisation (despite two years of World War) that war had arrived on their doorstep: ‘We know a bit what War is like now’. For some, there was even an undeniable element of excitement – one witness writes that ‘now that it’s over, none of us would’ve missed it for the world’. After watching a woman shot in the street, another witness notes that he ‘saw a man rush out and take a snapshot’. Elsewhere, there are ‘crowds looking on as if at a sham battle’. For most, however, it was the kind of excitement they could do without:

Mick O'Farrell was born in Dublin in 1966, the year of the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising. He has been studying the history and locations of the Rising for some years.He is the author of '50 Things You Didn't know about 1916' and 'A Walk Through Rebel Dublin 1916'.

An interesting perspective not often presented in conflicts. Shows some people changing to respect the "rebels".
Others ignoring them. Both reactions made 1921 possible!
