Born in Nokomis, Alabama, and raised in Mobile, Albert Murray graduated from TuskegeeUniversity, where he later taught, but he has long resided in New York City. He is the author of many critically acclaimed novels, memoirs, and essay collections, among them The Omni-Americans, South to a Very Old Place, Train Whistle Guitar, The Spyglass Tree, and The Seven League Boots. He is also a critic and visual artist, as well as a lifelong friend of and collaborator with artistic luminaries such as Ralph Ellison, Duke Ellington, and Romare Bearden. As such, his life and work are testaments to the centrality of southern and African American aesthetics in American art. Murray is widely viewed as a figure who, through his art and criticism, transforms the “fakelore” of white culture into a new folklore that illustrates the centrality of the blues and jazz idioms and reveals the black vernacular as what is most distinct about American art.

About the Author
Anne-Katrin Gramberg has served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabams, since 2005. Dr. Gramberg has been a Professor of German at Auburn University since 1993.

John F. Callahan is Morgan S. Odell Professor of Humanities at Lewis and Clark College. He is literary executor for Ralph Ellison's estate.

About the Author
Randy Stoecker is a Professor of Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, with a joint appointment at the University of Wisconsin Extension Center for Community and Economic Development. He is the moderator/editor of COMM-ORG: The On-Line Conference on Community Organizing and Development (http://comm-org.wisc.edu). His areas of expertise include community organizing and development, participatory action research/evaluation, and community information technology. He has been involved in a wide variety of community-based participatory research projects and participatory evaluations with community development corporations, community organizing groups, and community information technology programs across North America and Australia. He also helped build and evaluate university-community collaborations through the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation’s Learn and Serve America Community Research Project. Randy trains, speaks and writes extensively on community organizing and development, community-based participatory research, service learning, and community information technology. He is author of Defending Community (1994) co-author of Community-Based Research and Higher Education (2003), and co-editor of The Unheard Voices: Community Organizations and Service Learning (2009). About the Author
In addition to publishing two acclaimed collections of short fiction, Mary Ward Brown has received the PEN/Hemingway Award for Fiction, the Hillsdale Prize for Fiction from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and the Lillian Smith Book Award. Fanning the Spark and Not Getting Burned

This is a wonderful reminescence providing an intimate glimpse into a talented and persistant mind at work creating/writing and intenting and reinventing the self throuh the her involvment with her world. I should disclose up front that Mary Ward Brown is a friend of mine who goes way back in her connections to my family. No doubt those relationships influence some of how I feel about this work, but I believe that our history is independent of my valuation of this slim volume's insight into how a talented mine regards her work and goes about creating it. It is intensely self-revelatory without falling into the maudling sentimentality of a self absorbed person. She is a profound observer and she observes herself with the same honest, genuine ferocity that she turns of others.

"Tongues of Flame" has some wonderful stories, but the memoir glosses over her childhood ...

I am sorry I have to give this memoir only one star. I learned about Mary Ward Brown from Paul Theroux's recent book "Deep South" and ordered "Tongues of Flame" and this book. "Tongues of Flame" has some wonderful stories, but the memoir glosses over her childhood and her years of running the farm. She fills the book with excerpts from letters to her son in Vietnam, her various speeches while accepting awards, and even letters from her agent. The last half of the book seems like a diary, with details of where she ate and what she wore and what important writers she met in her travels, plus her various ailments. I was stunned that she never talked race relations. She lived during the era of JIm Crow and the civil right movement, but those times are not on her radar screen. She was 92 when the book was published, and her age probably explains its shortcomings.

Not quite a page-turner, but this book presents good applications of tensor math. Sometimes difficult to follow, the book omits many "assumed" steps. However, a fine escape into the world of absolute differential calculus.

This book constitutes the history of Absolute Differential Calculus, born from the cooperation from Albert Einstein and Tullio Levi Civita. It also keeps an account on what Gregorio Ricci Curbastro had previously estabilished on Tensors. I think it's a wonderful occasion, to study from the original papers of the authors of a theory, though they are generally somehow obscure, with respect to textbooks. This is definitely a great book.

Really An Excellent Book

When you read this book, you'll discover some things about yourself you didn't realize you knew.

1. You're creating new behaviors all the time.
2. You can modify those behaviors any time you choose.
3. You are in control of your life... you just need to learn how to push your own buttons.

Once you understand the rules - which the author lays out quite nicely - you will find it easy and fun to make small moves that create big changes.

Also, I love the structure of the book. The first 1/2 actually teaches you HOW and then the second 1/2 gives lots of different examples that make it real!

Smart, Well-Researched -- and It Works

Bookstores are filled with books that promise they hold the secret to changing our lives. But as we all know, change is a lot harder than the self-help industry wants us to believe. Caroline Arnold takes a fresh approach. In short, identify small changes you can make in your own life that can make a big difference - and act on them. The thing is: this approach really works. Reading this book inspired me to adopt a number of microresolutions. One example: I've resolved that if I talk to a friend on the phone from home I'm going to clean up at the same time. Instant result: a much cleaner house -- something I didn't achieve with endless general resolutions to keep things neater. Unlike many self-help books, this one is also smart, funny, well-researched, and a pleasure to read. Now I just need to work on that eating in front of the computer late at night . . .

Absolutely Loved the First 30%, then It Lost Me.

The first section of this book is excellent. It explains the concept of microresolutions, why they work, and gives rules on how to implement them. I was motivated to begin using them before I even finished this part of the book, much less the whole thing. I came away believing microresolutions can help me or anyone create lasting change and achieve goals.

The remainder of the book gives real world examples of how to use microresolutions, but I felt like it was instead telling me which goals I should be pursuing. I acknowledge that using examples will help readers understand how to use this new tool, but this just went too far. If I wanted to be told which goals to adopt to improve nutrition, I'd be reading a book by a nutritionist.

All in all, I'm still glad I read this book, especially the first 30%.
