Kwan-Yuk Claire Sit grew up in Hong Kong and moved to the U.S. to attend graduate school. She holds a Ph.D. in pure mathematics from the City University of New York and is Professor Emerita at La Guardia Community College. Nassyam Basha is a Database Administrator. He has around seven years of IT experience of which the last five years have been as a Production Oracle DBA. Oracle Data Guard Administration

Rich with real world examples including logical Standby setup. Has a great best practices section and common issues section.
The details on how to patch a Data Guard system are excellent and are probably worth the price of the book alone. There are plenty of Advanced Techniques included. Well done!

Oracle Data Guard 11gR2 Administration Beginner's Guide

Introduction:

This book is written by my friends Mr. Emre Baransel and Mr. Nassyam Basha. In the following post, I am going to explain why every Oracle DBA should read this book.

2- The Book:

First chapter of the book explains the Data Guard architecture; what is Standby Database? What`s physical / Logical / Snapshot standby database? Role Transition, Redo apply and SQL Apply? Switchover and fail over? Understand the concepts and the component definitions are a good start to successfully implement an Oracle Data Guard environment.

Chapter 2 shows complete steps to implement a physical standby database. This chapter states and explains most of the options available to implement verify and monitor a successful physical standby database. It provides very deeply explanation of Data Guard initialization parameters.

Chapter 3 starts mentioning pre-requisites before a logical standby database implementation. This chapter states and explains most of the options available to configure verify and monitor a successful logical standby database.

Chapter 4 introduces the Data Guard Borker, it clearly shows its components, benefits and the DGMGRL tool. This chapter shows also Data Guard Borker setup and how it is used to change dataguard configuration and database proprieties. The chapter has a very good section about troubleshooting Data Guard Borker, Tracing and most common broker issues. Authors also explain about the Fast Start Fail over (FSFO) and the Observer.

Chapter 5 is about protection modes, good chapter to understand differences between Data Guard modes. This chapter also has some examples to change protection mode using SQL*Plus, the Broker and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Chapter 6 is about Role transitions (Switch Over and Fai Over). Authors have explained different examples using SQL*Plus, Data Guard Broker and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Chapter 7 is about Active Data Guard, Snapshot Standby databases, Cascade standby. The chapter shows how to enable Active Data Guard option using SQL*Plus and Broker. They show ;
- Techniques to monitor the Active Data Guard environment.
- Integration of Active Data Guard with EBS, SAP and other applications.
- The steps to convert to a snapshot standby database and cascade standby.
- How to implement the advanced compression option and a cross platform Data Guard.

Chapter 8 shows examples to the integration of the Data Guard configuration with;
- Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.
- RMAN
- RAC

Chapter 9 is about Data Guard patching with many examples about patch application, Logical and physical standby databases. This is also a very good chapter.

Chapter 10 and 11 are unique, they cover handling the most common issues in a Data Guard environment and Data Guard best practices using TAF, FCF, FAN and other recommended configurations.

In my opinion, this book is not only for beginners but also covers many useful and gives many recommendations for more experienced Oracle DBA. About the Author
Janet Lewis was a novelist, poet, and short-story writer whose literary career spanned almost the entire twentieth century. The New York Times has praised her novels as “some of the 20th century’s most vividly imagined and finely wrought literature.” Born and educated in Chicago, she lived in California for most of her adult life and taught at both Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley. Her works include The Wife of Martin Guerre (1941), The Trial of Sören Qvist (1947), The Ghost of Monsieur Scarron (1959), Good-Bye, Son and Other Stories (1946), and Poems Old and New (1982).

A so-so historical novel, not nearly as compelling as the author's "The Wife of Martin Guerre"

Sören Qvist was the parson of a village in Jutland, Denmark. The year was 1625. Sören Qvist was a saintly man, albeit with one weakness -- a lightning-quick temper. His antagonists were Morten Bruus, a parishioner who was thoroughly evil but at the same time cunning and poised, and Morten's brother Neils, who was a sly, lazy dolt.

In the novel, there are two "trials" of Sören Qvist. One had to do with the challenge of dealing with his temper, which he viewed as a trial that God had presented him. The other involved the trial on a charge brought by Morten Bruus that Sören Qvist had murdered his brother Neils, when Neils, a worker on Sören Qvist's farm, had once again refused to do what he was told and then enraged Sören Qvist by mocking him. No one acquainted with the parson believed that even with his temper he was capable of murder, yet the circumstantial evidence was formidably stacked against him. The key to the bewildering mystery of the case was not revealed until twenty-one years later, in 1646, when a one-armed man who once had been a soldier in Wallenstein's army showed up in Jutland with a claim to the estate of Morten Bruus, who had recently died.

The structure of THE TRIAL OF SÖREN QVIST is unusual: the tale begins with the denouement of 1646, before dropping back to the trial of 1625. Janet Lewis's narrative prose, however, is rather conventional. (The novel was written in 1947.) The novel is based on an historical episode, which Janet Lewis learned about from a legal casebook, "Famous Cases of Circumstantial Evidence".

Lewis had taken from the same casebook the story told in her earlier novella, "The Wife of Martin Guerre". I was quite taken by that novella; reading it was what prompted me to go on to SÖREN QVIST. I see that some readers find SÖREN QVIST the better of the two, but in my opinion "Martin Guerre" is far superior. At ninety-eight pages, it is a model of concision. In contrast, SÖREN QVIST is long-winded and belabored; moralization and sentimentality are allowed to creep in; and I suspect that it is far more fictionally embroidered than is "Martin Guerre".

A Guilt-Edged Novel

Poet and novelist Janet Lewis graduated from Oak Park High School near Chicago the year before Ernest Hemingway, married Yvor Winter, an influential literary critic, and died in 1998 at the age of 99. Her best known novel is "The Wife of Martin Guerre," but there's lots to like, also, in "The Trial of Soren Qvist." It's hard to describe the plot without spoiling the suspense, so I'll just say it is set in Denmark during the 17th Century and is about the moral dilemmas associated with the trial of an upright pillar of a community who may or may not have been guilty of a murder. Lewis has a lovely, spare, writing style that draws the reader into the cold and windswept village where the action occurs.

Ms Janet Lewis is a newly found American author for us. The good thing is that she writes very, very well. One of those books that as you are reading you tend to look at the number of remaining pages with some dread. I really don't want this book to end, sort of thing.The bad news is that Ms Lewis did not write that many novels. So, this is a great book.

At last a Craniosacral book that puts it all together with clarity

I gave this book a 5 star rating . I gave it this number because it is one of the very few books on Craniosacral Therapy that addresses a number of topics that often are not often discussed and should be because of their practical importance in the clinic .
The word integration says it all . For many years the great Myofascial Release teacher John Barnes has long stated that CST is best combined with Myofascial release for better results . This is not covered in a lot of CST books. This book has considerable chapter on this subject and demonstrates it's relativity to good CST work . In other words for treating a number of clinic problems the treatment must be integrated and a variety of approaches may be applicable .
There are great chapters on topics such as T4 syndrome and autonomic nervous system integration. These subjects may be touched upon by other CST books but not in a clear or succinct way that is depicted in this book . The chapters are clear and set out in a logical manner and a great deal of effort has been put into describing how the practitioner should set the scene to approach treating clients . Attlee has pitched this book as a book that can be used as a foundation primer for anyone starting learning CST work. I like the book because he covers different aspects of the work such as biomechanics,energy , emotional ,Fascial and biodyamic. He is not just stuck in one approach .
I would thoroughly recommend this book as the first book for a beginning CST therapist or student and as a good review for those who who are practitioners . Certainly is is going to be on our required reading list for our Craniosacral Therapy Academy of Australia

caravanserais, country residences, hammams and great works of art, equally attest to Umayyad

Despite a half-century of literature documenting the experience and meanings of countertransference in analytic practice, the concept remains a source of controversy. For Peter Carnochan, this can be addressed only by revisiting historical, epistemological, and moral issues intrinsic to the analytic enterprise. Looking for Ground is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive understanding of countertransference on the basis of a contemporary reappraisal of just such foundational assumptions.

Rejecting the claim that analysis operates in a realm outside conventional accounts of value, he argues that the analytic alternative to traditional moralism is not tantamount to emancipation from the problem of morality.

With wide-ranging scholarship and graceful writing, Carnochan refracts the major theoretical and clinical issues at stake in contemporary psychoanalytic debates through the lens of countertransference - its history, its evolution, its philosophical ground, its moral dimensions. About the Author
Peter G. M. Carnochan, Ph.D., is a psychologist in private practice in San Francisco. He studied philosophy at Harvard University and is currently a candidate at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. He has written articles on the development of emotion and cognition, and presented psychoanalytic papers at American Psychological Association conferences. Dr. Carnochan has served as the associate editor of the Psychologist Psychoanalyst and currently serves on the board of the Childhood and Adolescence Section of the Psychoanalysis Division of the APA.

Intelligent post-modern perspective

Academia is replete with examples of post-modernist theoretical works in disciplines ranging from organizational studies to literary criticism. Carnochan has done something rare - brought an intelligent and humane post-modern perspective to a discussion of psychoanalytic technique and theory. Rare in that one is not led to give up hope of discerning a way to move through the confusion of a world in which all is subjective. In clear and beautiful prose, he articulates a view in which subjectivity does not require that we relinquish morality.

The long journey from dissertation to book is at last over. Carnochan's focus on counter-transference is essential for any therapist attempting to balance a humane versus *objective* approach to the patient/client/analysand. Therapists' careful self-revelations CAN further the cause of healing. In street parlance, "keepin' it real" is a far greater gift to the patient than the most rigorous "technique." Your technique often IS your subjectivity as a therapist. Kudos to Pedro and Sandor...
