About the Author
Joseph S. Tuman (J.D., University of California, Berkeley; B.A., political science, University of California, Berkeley) is Professor of Political and Legal Communications at San Francisco State University, where he regularly teaches upper-division courses in rhetoric and terrorism, political and legal communication, argumentation & advocacy, and technology and human communication. A past recipient of the Jacobus tenBroek Society Award for Teaching Excellence, Professor Tuman has also taught at the University of California, St. Mary’s College, the New School for Social esearch, and Paris II, the top law school in France. He is the author of Political Communication in American Campaigns(SAGE, ©2008) and the co-author of numerous books, including Freedom of Speech in the Marketplace of Ideas and of The Bedford/St. Martin's Guide to Public Speaking; he has also been the journal editor of Contemporary Argumentation & Debate: The Journal of the Cross Examination Debate Association. His work has been featured in news publications such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, and he has served as a network analyst for news programs on ABC, NBC, CNN and CNN International, FOX and the BBC. He currently appears as a regular political commentator for CBS in the western United States.

"You can't put it down," is not a phrase usually associated with a textbook, but that's how I feel about Joe Tuman's Political Communication in American Campaigns. From his wealth of experience as a campaign worker, professional speech writer, media consultant and media pundit, Tuman draws the reader into the political arena to explore everything from how political campaigns are managed to the complex strategies of political debates. Even (and especially) when discussing the deconstruction of a political speech, involving audience analysis, rhetorical appeals, rhetorical figures and fallacies, you are with him. He maintains objectivity while analyzing all political parties. Footnotes are comprehensive and impressive. His writing is crisp and contemporary, as he refers to media personalities like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. Whether you are a young college student or a seasoned political junkie like me, you will find this book a valuable and treasured resource. Read it as a text or take it to the beach!

Great professor, great textbook!

This textbook is very accessible to those who have never studied politics before, and is really interesting and informational. Also a great professor, Tuman knows how to put teachings into text without dragging on or getting to wordy, and jargon isn't a problem-it is all explained! I highly recommend for students, communication or politics enthusiasts, or anyone who wants to learn more about either subject!
