About the Author
Gershon Winkler is a widely recognized scholar in the fields of Jewish law, lore, theology, and mysticism. A descendant of a scion of rabbis originating in Judea, Rabbi Winkler has devoted much of the past two decades to writing and teaching about the lesser-promulgated wisdoms of Judaism and to Hebraic scriptural interpretation. Rabbi Winkler is also the founder and executive director of Walking Stick Foundation, a non-profit organization devoted to the recovery of aboriginal Judaism.

A curious potpourri

This mischevious little book gathers excerpts from all over the Jewish legal codes on such topics as masturbation, nudity, looking at your partner in the nude, variations in positions, etctera, etcetera, all with the aim of demonstrating that the rabbis of sainted memory weren't as prudish as their tzaddik portraits make them appear. Winkler is a provocateur par excellence, sifting through centuries of rabbinic literature to find minority opinions permitting nearly everything that contemporary ultraorthodoxy now notoriously prohibits. The jewel in the crown is a translation of Jacob of Emden's 18th-century responsum defending the halachic validity of concubinage (an non-marital arrangement between a man and an unmarried woman that can be terminated at will). Concubinage has long been legislated out of existence, but Jacob of Emden's dissenting opinion holds that as long as an unmarried woman is (a) using the mikveh, and (b) monogamous, there should be no problem for her to have relations with a man (married or unmarried) under concubinage laws. Rabbis who disagree, like Maimonides, who holds that such a woman would be a kedesha (prostitute), or Nachmanides, who holds that concubinage is a perogative for kings only, don't get much airtime here. This book is all about stirring the pot.

So who is this book intended for? Unmarried Torah Jews aren't going to suddenly start sneaking off to the mikveh, and why would anyone else need a heter for what they are going to do anyway? I'm puzzled about that one. But then I read the book, so what can I say.

As an aside, it's interesting that Winkler interprets "turning over the table" in Nedarim 20b as a variation in sexual position. Traditional interpretation actually holds that this passage refers to something considerably raunchier. And, yes, even black-hat rabbis agree that it's permitted.

Everything you ever wanted what Traditional Orthodox Judaism teaches about sex? Well, this book ocvers everything from Pre-marital sex to birth control, to everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask. This book shows that Judaism, Orhtodox in particular, is not cut and dry and boring when it comes to sexuality as some make it seem. Get this book and you will learn things you only thought were possible. Also, everything that is talked about in the book has a source if you just can't believe your eyes. Believe me, you will re-read it at least twice when you read this book's contents.

Excellent history on sex

Enjoyed this book, very well put together, has helped me understand sex in the Old Testament and what Gods view on sex is vs. how it's become corrupted in today's society, either it is everything is acceptable, whatever feels good is right or nothing is acceptable, and to deny our very nature as sexual beings.

Today there are two extremes to sex in life. Neither are what God intended for His covenant people.

Issue fourteen of the excellent Game of Thrones graphic novel cover Eddard XI through Sansa III and finishing with Eddard XII, or chapters 43 to 45.

This covers Eddard's epiphany about Queen Cercei's secret and their confrontation which ends with the most famous line from the book, "When you play the game of thrones, there is no middle ground. you win or you die."

The colouring of these issues have been wonderful and this issue is no exception. If I have a criticism of the series, it is that Sansa has a pretty shapely figure for an eleven year old. She looks more like Catelyn's sister and not her daughter. Oh you comic book guys!

Mark J. Blechner, Ph.D., is Training and Supervising Analyst and Teaching Faculty at the William Alanson White Institute and at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. A member of the editorial board of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Dr. Blechner also participates in the study group on neuropsychoanalysis at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. He has written numerous articles on dreams and is the editor of Hope and Mortality: Psychodynamic Approaches to AIDS (Analytic Press, 1997).

Mark Blechner's "The Dream Frontier" is a fascinating book!
A must for any researcher or clinician who is interested in the theory of brain and dreaming.
I have found his discussion of the reality feelings in the dreams and the multiple systems involved in creating the dreams - very enlightening.
I believe his new ideas about the INTEROBJECTS and DISJUNCTIVE cognitions - are very important for understanding dream phenomenology, an area quite neglected since the interpretation of dreams came to the front stage.

Lamento que no haya 6 estrellas. Las merece!!

Es una novela en el sentido de que hay personajes y acontecimientos que llevan adelante la trama. Además, es una reflexión sobre grandes temas que corresponden a los personajes del título. En el caso de Henry, los temas serían las expectativas, los roles, el destino y las sorpresas que el destino puede deparar. En el caso de Cato, se reflexiona sobre la fe, las dudas acerca de la existencia de Dios y de su falta de presencia frente a las crisis , el sentido del ministerio sacerdotal en un determinado contexto social, la posibilidad de incidir (mejorar?) sobre las personas.
Henry es hijo segundo de una familia rural inglesa. Al morir su hermano mayor, pasa a heredar todo el patrimonio y el rol de cabeza de familia y responsable de bienes y personas. Las expectativas estuvieron siempre puestas en su hermano mayor, el HEREDERO,y el sentimiento de Henry de haber sido relegado tanto en el afecto como en las aspiraciones sobre su futuro, le dificultan asumir el nuevo rol.
Cato se ordena sacerdote católico y desarrolla su ministerio en barrios pobres de Londres. Hay una brumosa relación entre el sacerdote y un adolescente de los barrios bajos, a quien Cato desea proteger y redimir, con confusas intenciones.. Se plantea una vuelta de tuerca interesante : la víctima no resulta ser el adolescente sino Cato,el sacerdote, que sin sospecharlo se convierte en objeto de la manipulación de un joven que conoce ya los entresijos del mundo de la delincuencia y posee una notable habilidad para manejar y destruir a las personas.
Se trata de una lectura densa, que proporciona abundante material para reflexionar. El estilo es depurado, las ideas fluyen con naturalidad, y la trama argumental proporciona sorpresas que resultan un condimento atractivo.
Es uno de esos libros que, una vez terminados, dejan la sensación de tiempo bien aprovechado.

No me gustó mucho. Si bien la historia es más o menos interesante, hay demasiadas disquisiciones confusas, muchas veces contradictorias, dichas o pensadas por los personajes. También hay bastante reiteraciones innecesarias. El estilo de redacción no es de mi agrado.

A convincing account of reduplicative phenomena has been a longstanding
problem for rule-based theories of morphophonology. Many scholars believe that
derivational phonology is incapable in principle of analyzing reduplication. In

his intent is conservative: to provide evidence that the model of the phonological
computation developed by Chomsky and Halle in 1968 is fundamentally correct--that
surface forms are produced by the successive modification of underlying forms.
Frampton's theory accounts for the surface properties of reduplicative morphemes by
operations that are distributed at various points in the morphophonology rather than
by a single operation applied at a single point. Lexical insertion, prosodic
adjustment, and copying can each make a contribution to the output at different
points in the computation of surface form.Frampton discusses particular
reduplicative processes in many languages as he develops his general theory. The
final chapter provides an extensive sequence of detailed case studies. Appendixes
offer additional material on the No Crossing Constraint, the autosegmental structure
of reduplicative representations, linearization, and concatenative versus
nonconcatenative morphology. This volume will play a major role in the main debate
of current phonological research: what is the nature of the phonological
computation?

Deep Cut, a play about the cover up of a young womans death by the British Army

This play written in the reality style concerns the experiences and dignified reaction by the mother and father of an 18 year old woman soldier who died in suspicious circumstances at Deepcut. The family have never had an explanation of what really happened that day.

The Army and the Police never investigated the death seriously and either lost, destroyed or ignored evidence prefering to call it suicide. Other recruits there tell of extreme bullying, harrasment and sexual assaults. All of this was swept under the carpet by the Army and the Police. An additional review by another Police force found that it might of been murder and two persons of interest were never seriously interviewed despite one of them changing his story repeatedly and 30 minutes of his time unaccounted for.

The shocking part is that it wasn't the first death there in suspicious circumstances, there was another less than six months earlier. Six years later there were another two.

The play leaves you with a feeling of concern and anger about the indiference of govenmental organisations with their own agenda towards the families of young people who had thier lives cut tragically short.

Best new book I've read this year

This is a brilliant analysis of the experience of old age caregiving for parents and children as the agrarian 19th century turned into the industrial 20th (circa 1840 to 1940), and families began to face longer life expectancies without the social safety nets of pensions, Social Security, nursing homes, Medicare and Medicaid.

While some may see that era of private provision for one's old age as a lost period of love and rectitude, Hartog paints a compelling but much darker picture. Though his sources center on 200 cases of contested inheritances for the details of how families negotiated old age care in the decades before and after the Civil war (most of the material is circa 1840 to 1910), he places these family dramas in social and legal context and captures an extraordinary amount of detail about how daughters and sons reordered their life plans to care for aging parents and parents used both love and property to lure them to do so.

Who won and who lost, and the fraught bargains and harsh choices both the young and old faced does not minimize the challenges faced by caregivers today, but makes a compelling case for the social supports we have created for the elderly, and the ways that they free the young to pursue their own lives (even if the middle aged must often return home to manage that care).

As one of the leading historians of law in the United States and no stranger to family law (his last book was on marriage). Hartog's analysis of the implications of property law doctrines for how families would arrange their lives explains much about what is the same, and what is very different, from the world faced by our great-great grandparents when they looked to their final years. It also explained to me why in old movies and novels the lawyer was always called to the deathbed to change the will, besides the usual trope in them about the new wife or conniving relatives.

I practice palliative medicine. Legal issues continue to arise at the end of life today: living wills and health care proxies to specify medical wishes and decisionmakers, wills, guardianship of minor children, distribution of property, provision for those left behind, and the rather newer legal practice of arranging trusts to take advantage of Medicaid and preserve family assets to list only the most common. Families continue to face incredible challenges in financing, providing, and managing care, particularly the expectations placed on daughters and the mismatch between those expectations and careers for women when housing costs make it difficult for one income to support a family, and more women have become the primary breadwinners for their families. All of this seems new and overwhelming -- and overwhelming it is -- but as Hartog shows, new, it is not.

Not disappointed.

I enjoyed it except for the font size which I can not fault the author for. Funny how we think we have come so far and yet I continue to handles cases such like the Davison case from 1848. Interesting and worthy of those who are interested in the subject and history.

Disappointing

I admit that I didn't read the sub-title when I chose to purchase this book so perhaps I deserve to be disappointed. This book is truely a history of inheritance rather than case study of modern estate and inheritance practices. The cases cited are from the mid-1800s so have little value to estate and inheritance law today. A book that I enjoyed titled From the Grave is much more relevant and fun to read.

Research in collective memory is a relatively new area capturing the interest of scholars in social psychology, memory, sociology, and anthropology. The core idea is that collective attitudes and behaviors are created and shared through common experiences and communication among a cohort of people. For example, people born between 1940 and 1960 are often defined via the JFK assassination and the Vietnam War. Their parents typically experienced lesser impact from these events.

Papers about collective memory have appeared in the literature under different guises for the last hundred years. Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents, Jung's ideas on the collective unconscious, and McDougall's speculation on the group mind posited that identity and action could be viewed as resulting from the shared development of a culture. Halbwachs, a French social psychologist (1877-1945) who was the first to write in detail about the nature of collective memory, argued that basic memory processes were all social. That is, people remember only those events that they have repeated and elaborated in their discussions with others.

In the last several years, there has been a resurgence of interest in this general topic because it addresses some fundamental questions about memory and social processes. Work closely related to these questions deals with the nature of autobiographical memory, traumatic experience and reconstructive memory, and social sharing of memories. This book brings together an international group of researchers who have been empirically studying some basic tenets of collective memory.
