Jeremy V. Jones has played soccer throughout his life, including being goalkeeper for his high school team. Now he coaches his daughter’s team when he’s not writing about sports, outdoor adventure, music, and other fun topics. Jeremy is an award-winning writer and former editor of Breakaway magazine, whose recent books include Walking on Water. He absolutely adores his wife, daughter, and son—and most of the time thinks his two dogs are pretty cool too. The whole family loves to travel and explore the Colorado mountains near their home.

Keeping his eyes on the real victory.

This book is the true story of soccer star Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, a.k.a. Kakå. What is unique and interesting about Kakå is his strong Christian faith. Unlike most of today's popular sports figures, he is someone that everyone can look up to. Not that he is perfect, but he tries to live a humble Christian life.

Kakå doesn't pray and ask God to win games, but prays and thanks God for the talent and opportunities that He has given to him. Kakå knows that it still takes hard work on his part to accomplish things, but he truly uplifts the Lord's name whenever he gets the chance.

One highlight is that even though this soccer superstar was rich and famous, he kept his virginity until he married the love of his life. His wife also remained a virgin.

This is a good book for soccer fans. It gives tons of good soccer history info, and even has 'fun facts" at the end of each chapter. This is a good read for any young Christian who is into sports.

Inspiring Story!

I bought this book for my son, who is 12 years old, and soccer crazy. He read it immediately, and really enjoyed Kaka's story. I am always on the hunt for inspirational kids books, which deliver a positive message. This book definitely measures up!!

Toward the Goal

Kaka is a young Football (Soccer if you're from America) player from Brazil. He loves sports & he loves God. When he is seriously injured as a young teen, the doctors were surprised he wasn't paralysed, and were sure that he would never play sports again. But God is bigger than injuries, and Kaka went on to play football, in fact playing football very well!!

This book is written for preteens(9-12), with a great message of faith. It also talks about working hard for your goals. I like how the book is set up with story and background information. Without seeming like a 'school book' the author adds a few paragraphs at the end of each chapter about different topics (Brazil, history of soccer, world cup records ect), so you learn something new!! It was very fun. I also like how the author added the first round info for the 2010 World Cup, letting you know that Kaka's story isn't finished yet!! If you have a preteen that likes sports, check out this book!! (I actually checked into it because I have friends who have a preteen, and they are missionaries in Brazil!!, makes me feel a bit closer to them :) )

For the faithful undertaking the hadj Palestine rapidly became a sacred destination, which sanctified the pilgrimage to Mecca. Under the Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman dynasties, influxes of pilgrims poured into Palestine to visit Jerusalem and its Haram al-Sharif – the ‘Noble Holy Site’. In this climate of active religiousness, it is not surprising that Palestine
became one of the most prestigious centres for learning in the Muslim world. The most
eminent erudites came to teach in the al-Asqa Mosque, men of letters whose reputation
spanned the whole of the Islamic world devoted themselves with passion to the art of
debate, exegesis and rhetoric. Hundreds of madrasas were built in Jerusalem,
Hebron, Nablus, Gaza and Zefat, the Haram al-Sharif alone may have accommodated up
to 360 masters of different disciplines. These allowed for the decisive launch of Sufic
philosophy, while, concurrently, promoting healthy economic activity galvanised by the continuous
meetings of scholars and the faithful. Thousands of monumental tombs, mosques, zawiyas
and caravanserais were built. To the enormous benefit of art history, these allocations,
which, under the Ottoman Empire, were granted as far as Asia, Europe and Africa, have also
guaranteed, in the long term, the upkeep and conservation of an impressive architectural heritage. It
is thus that in this most modest geographic area, a sumptuous heritage transforms the country into
an amazing architectural museum, where the entire panorama of Islamic styles is still present today.

This text was used in an undergraduate molecular biology lab course which i took, and it contained detailed information and suggestions which were extremely useful for beginning students. This text has continued to be useful, however, as a reference for commonly used protocols and for troubleshooting experiments.

At its peak, the KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti) was the largest secret police and espionage organization in the world. The GRU (Glavnoye Razvedyvatelnoe Upravlenie) is the principal intelligence unit of the Russian armed forces, having been established in 1920 by Leon Trotsky during the Russian civil war. The GRU was the first subordinate to the KGB, and while the KGB broke up with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the GRU remains intact, cohesive, highly efficient, and with far greater resources than its civilian counterparts. These are just two of the long list of Russian and Soviet intelligence agencies that are covered in the Historical Dictionary of Russian and Soviet Intelligence. Through a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on organizations like the Oprichnina, Okhrana, GPU, NKVD, KGB, GRU, Smersh, SVR, and FSB, a clear picture of the history of this subject is presented. This entry in the publisher's Historical Dictionaries on Intelligence and Counterintelligence series delves into the culture and alphabet soup of Russian and Soviet Union intelligence. Former CIA analyst and academic Pringle has done a masterful job of sorting out and describing the world of intelligence, its key participants, and the importance that intelligence has played in Russian and Soviet history from the founding of the first Russian secret service in 1564 to the Putin presidency. Countries that were allies of the Soviet Union, such as East Germany, are also given entries.

Almost as important as the dictionary itself are the chronology of intelligence and the introduction at the beginning of the book. These, along with entries such as Tradecraft ("the art or science of spying") and enona (the code name for the decryption of several thousand Russian intelligence messages in the late 1940s), will give the reader a rudimentary knowledge of how the country ran its sophisticated, deeply entrenched intelligence "business."

Entries are a few sentences to a half page or page in length. See alsoreferences are noted in bold type. Although only 300 entries make up the dictionary portion of the work, it is chock-full of key as well as lesser-known operations, people, and agency information. The information on defectors during the cold war era as well as the numerous double agents and operations is surprising. Key cases, such as those of Igor Gouzenko, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and John Walker, are discussed. The 35-page bibliography is a resource worthy of academics and a useful jumping-off point for those wanting more in-depth information in any number of areas of Russian and Soviet intelligence history.

From Viktor Abakumov, the World War II-era head of the Soviet Ministry of State Security, to Nikolai Zubatov, a pre-revolutionary police agent, this historical dictionary by Pringle (a former US foreign service officer and intelligence analyst) covers important individuals, organizations, events, and issues of Russian and Soviet intelligence activities from the time of Ivan the Terrible to the present day in cross-referenced alphabetical entries. Also included in the dictionary are an introductory historical essay, a chronology, and a bibliography, as well as appendixes on the evolution of Soviet state security, KGB chairs, Chiefs of foreign intelligence, heads of military intelligence, and other information. About the Author
Robert W. Pringle is a veteran of 25 years service with the Department of State and the Central Intelligence Agency. From 1998 to 2004 Pringle taught history and political science courses at the University of Kentucky's Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce.

Leaves a lot unsaid

A dose of cold water compared to other reviews.
This book leaves a lot to be desired. There are entries that leave you guessing such as Ivan Pavlovich Abramov - date of birth and death missing - entry says little about him other than he worked for the KGB. So what?
Andrew Dalton Lee, an American, is included in the listing for Christopher Boyce instead of in the 'L' section.
Boris Nemetsov is mentioned in 'Assassination', but there is no entry for him.
Ivan A. Zybin, Russian cryptologist genius is not mentioned.
Likewise, there are no entries for Boris Devyatkin, Moishe Stern, Alexander Koral, and many more. In fairness there were and still are thousands of Russian/Soviet spies at work all over the world.
Appendix G is a short list of Venona code-names and an example of Soviet encryption methods - would make more sense to separate the two subjects.
The bibliography is wonderful as is the author's discussion, but confusing when listed by subject matter.
All in all, there is a goldmine of information in these 421 pages and as usual for this particular subject, finding the good nuggets is difficult.

Indispensable - and not just for understanding the past

An excellent point of departure for further research into many areas of Russian and Soviet intelligence,and increasingly, the current Russian state: according to a recent Moscow Times article, "An astounding 78 percent of the country's leadership has links to the KGB or FSB, according to estimates by Olga Kryshtanovskaya, a leading sociologist who tracks Kremlin politics and the security services. Twenty-six percent of the officials acknowledge their involvement, while the rest give themselves away 'by the holes in their resumes, Kryshtanovskaya said." [see Mereu, Francesca. Dr. Pringle is a man of great integrity with a vast amount of knowledge on this topic. This book will prove essential to anyone interested in understanding Russian political history. I took both an upper-level history course on the Cold War and a political science course on US national intelligence at the University of Kentucky with Dr. Pringle, and I can truly say that these were two of the best classes I have ever taken. How did the 1990s and early 21st century impact the evolution of the college presidency? In order to understand legitimacy, Bornstein has spplied theory from the social sciences and higher education literature, proposing five factors that influence presidential legitimacy: Individual, Institutional, Environmental, Technical and Moral. She also proposes six threats to legitimacy: Lack of Cultural Fit, Management Incompetence, Misconduct, Erosion of Social Capital, Inattentiveness, and Gradiosity. In light of these threats, she suggests strategies for gaining and maintaining legitimacy.
This book focuses on the impetus for leading change. Bornstein draws on numberouns sources for a theoretical perspective on the factors associated witht he president's role in creating legitimate change. She proposes a construct of four factors to implement legitimate change: Presidential Leadership, Governance, Social Capital, and Fund Raising. The concepts of transformational and transactional leadership are examined for their ability to facilitatle change. Bornstein finds their effectiveness limited and proposes "transformative leadership", a contextual approach that fits between transformational and transactional leadership in the conceptual continuum. Since presidents are often recruited on the basis of their academic experience, their legitimacy depends on securing resources to strengthen or transform their institution; fund raising is essential. About the Author
Rita Bornstein is President of Rollins College. She was previously Vice President at the University of Miami. In 2001, she was awarded the George D. and Harriet W. Cornell Chair of Distinguished Presidential Leadership.

Thoughtful and important

This well-written book by a sitting college president is a rarity in that it is scholarly as well as anecdotal. Bornstein develops the concept of a leader's "legitimacy" as a key determinant of administrative success. Experienced administrators will immediately appreciate the importance of her arguments and their application to professional practice. Administrative aspirants will find many helpful ideas and suggestions to help them avoid some pitfalls that may stall a career, and researchers and students will use this book as a source of provocative hypotheses This is a significant contribution to the literature which is grounded in social science research and moves far past the usual clichés about leadership and the college presidency.

A thoughtful, excellent book

Rita Bornstein's book should be required reading for all actual and would-be college administrators - but why stop there? Anyone interested in the legitimate use of power in a leadership position can benefit from reading this. She offers a thoughtful, honest clarity as she makes her points, using the story of her own presidency of Rollins College as a guidepost. Really good.

I have presented Rita Bornstein's book on two different occasions, in the company of college and university presidents. Bornstein presents a good historical evolution of the role of American academic presidents, from the 1990s to the early 21st Century; and gives careful insight into potential legitimacy traps that presidents are likely to face. Bornstein proposes six threats to presidential legitimacy: lack of cultural fit, management incompetence, misconduct, erosion of social capital, inattentiveness, and grandiosity. She then suggests strategies for overcoming these threats. A memorable statement she makes is that "all presidents feel like impostors" at one time or another during their tenure. She concludes with wise counsel on a president's exploration of the timing, grace, and legitimacy of exiting the presidency, and the succession process.
