Sue Ferguson Gussow is a figurative painter who works in a wide range of drawing and painting media. She is professor emerita of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union and presently teaches the advanced drawing seminar.

An eye-opener!

"Architects Draw" is an eye-opener. It's beautiful to view and fascinating to read - an excellent book, dealing with the constant loop running between the eye, the hand and the mind. Don't confuse this with a "how-to" book. (I was surprised to discover the misleading subtitle, "Freehand Fundamentals,"in the promotional copy, doesn't exist anywhere on or in the book.) The text, together with well reproduced student drawings and professional drawings, opened my eyes and mind to how a person might learn to draw - or simply to think about the process of drawing.
First rate reading for anyone interested in the relationship of drawing to architecture, or enthusiastic about the art of drawing itself.

Intelligent and complex

It's not often that an intellectually complex book like "Architects Draw" comes along. It's rare that any book falling into the 'art' category should offer so diverse a conceptual range. The book is brilliant; there are almost no books on teaching the practice of drawing as thorough-going and imaginative as this one, nor are their many books committed solely to the drawings of architects. There are few books devoted to a single topic that are so beautifully reproduced. Gussow has achieved a delicate balance in producing a text which will appeal to those with a general interest in and appreciation for the art of drawing as well as those with a more focused and specific interest.
Artists, teachers and architects will discover in it an invaluable source for making drawings or teaching the art of drawing.
The book is enormously impressive, not so much for beauty of its illustrations as for the intelligence and succinctness of its text. "Architects Draw" represents a double achievement. Its illustrations underscore Gussow's considerable ability to elicit and expand the drawing abilities of her architecture students. The book exhibits Gussow's prodigious ability to communicate clearly and without jargon. The descriptions of her teaching techniques and their reflection in her students' work are fascinating. The work of Gussow's students as reproduced in "Architect's Draw" is a testimony to her own intelligence as well as to her life-long, passionate and reciprocal commitment to Cooper Union's architecture students.
