Why has a successfully medicated schizophrenic suddenly begun hearing voices again? further evidence of this unique relationship. The Arab-Norman synthesis displayed a powerful
originality born out of three centuries (XII-XIV) of the successful integration of motifs, typologies,
techniques and infrastructures.

This methodical enterprise that was undertaken over the 14th and 15th centuries resulted in a true cohesion
which contributed to the empire apogee of the 16th century.

totally authentic creative style and a basis for the later art of
the Ottoman empire.

In June of 1861, only a few weeks after the first shots at Fort Sumter ignited the Civil War, Union prisoners of war began to arrive in Southern prisons. One hundred and fifty years later Civil War prisons and the way prisoners of war were treated remain contentious topics. Partisans of each side continue to vilify the other for POW maltreatment. Roger Pickenpaugh’s two studies of Civil War prisoners of war facilities complement one another and offer a thoughtful exploration of issues that captives taken from both sides of the Civil War faced.

In Captives in Blue, Pickenpaugh tackles issues such as the ways the Confederate Army contended with the growing prison population, the variations in the policies and practices inthe different Confederate prison camps, the effects these policies and practices had on Union prisoners, and the logistics of prisoner exchanges. Digging further into prison policy and practices, Pickenpaugh explores conditions that arose from conscious government policy decisions and conditions that were the product of local officials or unique local situations. One issue unique to Captives in Blue is the way Confederate prisons and policies dealt with African American Union soldiers. Black soldiers held captive in Confederate prisons faced uncertain fates; many former slaves were returned to their former owners, while others were tortured in the camps. Drawing on prisoner diaries, Pickenpaugh provides compelling first-person accounts of life in prison camps often overlooked by scholars in the field.

'Pickenpaugh, author of several earlier works on Confederate troops in Union hands, here takes a look Union troops captured by the Confederacy. As was the case with most armies of the day, the U.S. Army (and thus also the C.S. Army), had no policy on prisoners-of-war, only a little tradition. Improvisation led to disastrous consequences. Pickenpaugh does an excellent job explaining the emergence of the South’s P/W system. Despite generally good intentions, an effective “policy” never emerged. Poor oversight, scant resources, and poorly trained personnel led to hardship, disease, and occasional atrocity. Pickenpaugh covers the experience of capture, incarceration, and exchange and the development and collapse of exchange cartels. He also gives us profiles of many individuals, John H. Winder, the elderly and inept head of the South’s P/W system, Henry Wirz, an insensitive and inflexible petty bureaucrat of Andersonville infamy, and others. This is a useful book on the history of prisoners-of-war.'

"A Part of American History We Should Never Forget"

I listened to the Audible version of this book.

"Captives in Blue" was truly an eye-opening listen. Oftentimes when we think of POW's we don't always consider the captives from the Civil War. The treatment of these men was horrific. It's beyond me what sense it makes.

I had a great uncle who was a POW during WWII and I've heard similar stories to these. It's sad and heart-breaking.

The inhumane conditions of the treatment and the food, and lack thereof, among everything else is something that should've never happened. The camps at Sumter, Belle Island, Jacksonville, and Florence, among others were filthy and it's hard to believe that this actually happened. People should never forget the history of this. Listening to the prison diaries was sadly engrossing.

I listened to this book in parts each day leading up to Memorial Day. It was an extremely comprehensive look at a grim time in American history. A great job by Roger Pickenpaugh.

Jack Chekijian's narration was perfect for this book. His approach was that of sincerity which came across very well. His pronunciation was impeccable and he speaks clearly with a nice tone. I enjoyed his work with this audio.

Audiobook received in exchange for an honest review.

If you love "Downton Abbey" this is the book for you. The turn of the century English setting is fun, with new inventions such as automobiles and telephones bumping up against old traditions. The heroine is a widow, left with few options when her husband suddenly dies. Fortunately, she meets a mysterious woman who owns a "Ladies Employment Agency". She becomes the housekeeper for a scientist, Ford. He is consumed with his medical research to find a cure for the disease that took his younger sister's life. Folded into the sexy romance is a wonderful ghost story. I really loved "Madame Lou" and look forward to more books by this talented author.

In this powerful and wonderfully accessible meditation on psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, and social constructivism, Donnel Stern explores the relationship between two fundamental kinds of experience: explicit verbal reflection and "unformulated experience," or experience we have not yet reflected on and put into words. Stern is especially concerned with the process by which we come to formulate the unformulated. It is not an instrumental task, he holds, but one that requires openness and curiosity; the result of the process is not accuracy alone, but experience that is deeply felt and fully imagined.

Stern's sense of explicit verbal experience as continuously constructed and emergent leads to a central dialectic at the heart of his work: that between curiosity and imagination, on one hand, and dissociation and unthinking acceptance of the familiar on the other. The goal of psychoanalytic work, he holds, is the freedom to be curious, whereas defense signifies the denial of this freedom. We defend against our fear of what we would think, that is, if we allowed ourselves the freedom to think it.

Stern also shows how the unconscious itself can be reconceptualized hermeneutically, and he goes on to explore the implications of this viewpoint on interpretation and countertransference. He is especially persuasive in showing how the interpersonal field, which is continuously in flux, limits the experience that it is possible for participants to reflect on. Thus it is that analyst and patient are together "caught in the grip of the field," often unable to see the kind of relatedness in which they are mutually involved.

Donnel Stern, Ph.D., is Training and Supervising Analyst, William Alanson White Institute, and Faculty, NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. He is on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Psychoanalytic Inquiry and Psychoanalytic Psychology, and is the former editor of Contemporary Psychoanalysis.

Stern has created an amazing, breathtaking, thorough, and convincing reinterpretation of the unconscious and the phenomena associated with it. He brings a deeply assimilated knowledge of Gadamer, James, Merleau-Ponty and other hermeneutic and phenomenological thinkers to bear on the perennial problem of unconsciousness. Although the first chapter of this book is a bit turgid, Stern soon gets in his groove and before one knows it is radically, joltingly, and astoundingly shifting one's root ways of understanding the unconscious. Stern moves the locus of the psychoanalytic unconscious from the realm of actuality to that of possibility, showing how motivated unconsciousness is not so much the elimination of an actual experience from consciousness as it is the shutting down of particular possibilities of experiencing. Unlike other phenomenological thinkers who have suggested this (May, Boss, etc.) Stern actually works out in a very meticulous and careful way how and why this sort of "shutdown" can happen. He clearly shows how our experience of possibilities is every bit as psychologically important- if not more so- as is our experience of actualities. And when we recognize this, our whole conception of psychoanalysis and the unconscious is turned upside-down! This book is a must read for all those interested in psychology and psychoanalysis. It is able to explain all those nagging, ambiguous, contradictory things about the unconscious that keep you awake late at night.

A courageous journey into the conditiones of our existence

I wholeheartedly agree with what has been said so far about this book.
Here is an intensely intelligent author who takes us in a meticulously detailed way into those hidden inner processes that need to be formulated if we want to escape the pull of the past and life our full potential.
He has a gift to translate european hermeneutic theory (that seems almost to be formulated NOT to be understood) into a concrete common sense language.
The result is a potent package designed to bring you a few steps further along the way in understanding yourself. And as Gadamer seems to have said: Understanding is ultimately always understanding YOURSELF.
