From School Library Journal
Gr 2–5—Echoes of Shel Silverstein's brand of wit and whimsy reverberate in Florian's 170 poems. The kid-friendly selections creatively capture the quotidian comings and goings of youngsters in humorous, forward-thinking verse. Thick ink illustrations add to the look and feel of a coloring book while a simple font enhances the readability of literary comestibles sure to delight and please while augmenting developing language skills. Chapter headings include "Chortles & Chuckles," "Funny Bones & Belly Laughs," "Jests & Jives," and "Tons of Puns." The poems are brief in length and long on fun. The first selection, "Welcome," says it all: "Welcome to the Poem Depot-/Relax and stay a while./When you walk in/You'll surely grin,/And leave wearing a smile."—Magdaline Henderson-Diman, formerly at Bass Harbor Memorial Library, Bernard, ME
From Booklist
Florian’s latest is a generous compendium of light, clever verse on a variety of topics. A long selection here is two dozen lines; a short one is just three or four. Rhythm and rhyme keep the whole volume rolling along, while the expressive artwork gives readers reasons to pause along the way. With similarly titled chapters (“Wit and Whimsy,” “Rib-Ticklers and Sidesplitters”), the arrangement of selections often seems random, though poems based on nursery rhymes or familiar sayings, for instance, are often grouped together. Although not every book of poems is enhanced by illustrations, Florian’s bold, black line drawings ramp up the verbal humor and complete the pages visually without overwhelming the words. The occasional verse suggests an adult perspective, but most selections arise clearly from a child’s point of view. With a strong thread of wordplay, the poems will amuse children while also challenging them to think, making this an appealing source of short verse to memorize and an enjoyable collection of poetry to read just for fun. Grades 3-6. --Carolyn Phelan

The Place to Start
By Allan Markman
A child's laughter
Cures the heart!
Florian's book
Is the place to start.
At first they're so silly
Just read them for fun.
But he'll have you thinking (and discussing)
Before the book's done.
Here's a couple of my favorites:
"Peter picked his nose.
Pulled out a garden hose,
A herd of sheep, a flock of geese,
Six chickens who could speak Chinese,
Ten bumblebees, a speeding train,
And NEVER picked his nose again."
and
"The greatest invention was not the car,
Not the lightbulb and not the guitar,
Not the train and not the plane,
Not the umbrella which blocks all the rain.
No, the greatest invention,
It may seem absurd,
The greatest invention by far is
The word."
Florian has written a delightful book that fully understands and appreciates a child's intelligence, curiosity and sense of humor (not to mention the adult who often finds him/herself reading it to them).

Wonderful Book!
By This Kid Reviews Books
I love poetry books like this one. Short funny poems that make you smile. I think books like Poem Depot are a great way to get kids to read and think about poetry. The poems are short, fun to read and they all have nice black and white illustrations to go with them. Topics of the poem is anything and everything – from Spacemen to Mermaids – Broccoli to Cereal and beyond! Fans of Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein (like me) will love this book. I like how there is an index to the poems in the back and also an index of first lines – very nice touch.

This book is full of winners.
By Dolores, a teacher
There were a couple that fell flat for me, but many, many times I laughed out loud.
I will put this on the shelf with Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein and they will read it.
