About the Author
An acknowledged master of dark fantasy, Celia Friedman is the author of the highly acclaimed Coldfire trilogy, New York Times Notable Book of the Year This Alien Shore, In Conquest Born, The Madness Season, The Wilding, and the Magister trilogy. Neat sci-fi/fantasy premise, characters fell flat

Dreamwalker by C. S. Friedman is an intriguing mix of parallel worlds and fantasy elements and the start to a new series with a lot of potential. I haven’t read any of Friedman’s adult work so I went into Dreamwalker not knowing at all what to expect! I’m excited about the new universe that Dreamwalker has revealed, even though I didn’t completely connect with Dreamwalker itself.

Strengths:
I’m a fan of parallel worlds generally and Dreamwalker has a cool premise that integrates parallel worlds with fun sci-fi and fantasy elements.
Dreamwalker takes place mostly in a parallel world and the world-building (universe-building?) of what could happen if magic and the ability to cross between parallel worlds was concentrated all in one world was pretty awesome. There are some cool alternate history pieces thrown in mostly revolving around how the colonization of America could have been different with interference from parallel worlds. Plus it’s always fun when secret magic stuff is actually the explanation for all our various myths!
I’m a huge fan of strong sibling relationships and Dreamwalker’s plot is completely driven by sibling love, woot!
Dreamwalker has a nice and straightforward adventure plot. There is just something comfortable about knowing from the first couple of chapters what the goal is and running around on an adventure to meet that goal ;-).
Weaknesses:
Dreamwalker had a surprising amount of typos, especially for a traditionally-published finished copy.
There is the typical group of three teens setting out on adventure in Dreamwalker and the two secondary characters ended up feeling very flat to me. We barely get to know who they really are as people and they just kind of follow Jesse along on her quest.
Dreamwalker had a couple of plot holes that I actually felt the need to go back and make sure I didn’t miss something. One of them is kind of explained, but it really feels like a stretch. For those of you who have read this one, perhaps you can help me out: Why is Rita at the house on THE NIGHT and how do they get a car to drive to the mines since it seemed like it was implied that Rita left the original one to be found?
Despite the title of the book being Dreamwalker, we really don’t get all that many details about how that whole thing works, even from Jesse’s perspective. I realize this is likely to be filled in in later books, but I really felt unsatisfied with not getting more details given the title.
Summary:
Dreamwalker is a promising start to a series combing sci-fi and fantasy, even though there are some rough spots. I’m excited to see where the second book goes given that ending. If you’re on the fence, I’d recommend waiting until the second book is out and seeing how that one goes ;-).

A great read!

I am very new to reading anything fantasy/ sci- fi and I do not know all the "sci-fi lingo" words that people in the other reviews use ( I have only written a review once before). My daughter and I often share books, she gave me DreamWalker to read, saying to me that I needed to "try new things". Well, she was right! (not often I say that!) The main character, Jessica was so real to me, and her little brother Tommy, the way they find out about where they came from... I do not want to spoil it, but I honestly thought I would not like this type of book! I really recommend this book if you are looking to get out of a rut and have not read sci-fi or fantasy books before, it does not matter what age you are, as a good story is ageless!

I really hate to do this but....

I LOVE C.S. Friedman's work. Her Coldfire trilogy is one of my absolute favorites and her Magister trilogy is quickly rising up as a favorite as well. She is so wonderful at creating interesting characters that you love. She has a gift for character building. However, this book....this book lacks that magic. Now some of the ideas in this book are great. It's an interesting setting with much potential. But the characters in this book...They are so flat and boring. I found I just couldn't care less about them. The most intriguing character was probably Isaac and he wasn't even fleshed out quite enough. Like others mention, the story is very linear, which is yet another reason it just didn't grab me. The "romance" feels contrived/forced. She would have been better off just getting rid of it entirely. Now, it's not a terrible book. But neither is it great. Unlike her previous works which I have re-read countless times, I don't see myself re-reading this. This is probably my least favorite work by her. :( It hurts to give this review, but I feel I must.
I grabbed this up because I am a Friedman fan, so I didn't know it was YA. Maybe that's the reason why it's lacking. I can only hope she drops this YA thing and goes back to writing complex characters and rich plots. If you are a long time C.S. Friedman fan you might be very disappointed with this work. If you are new to her work, well I highly recommend grabbing her Coldfire and Magister trilogies. For sci-fi In Conquest Born and This Alien Shore are solids works. Please don't read Dreamwalker and think that's what C.S. Friedman is all about. She is so much better than this.
On another note, I was kind of amused by the gamer references being a gamer myself. The WoW raid references make me wonder if she has a gamer around in her life. :) Though Tommy's characterization feels a little bit stereotypical at times.
edit Update 10/27/14: Well, after an attempt to reread....nope it's not any better. In fact, I have an even worse opinion about the book. :( I said it wasn't a terrible book before, but I'm starting to rethink that. I think the biggest problem lies with the main character. She is just awful and it's very hard to keep reading a book where you hate the main character and couldn't care less about the rest of the characters. I also wish C.S. would drop the First Person point of view and use third person like she usually does. I feel so restricted when I'm in first person. Now it's not the first time I've encountered a series where I've hated the main character, but over time came to like and respect that character as she matured and learned. Juuni Kokki (Twelve Kingdoms)'s Youko is a great example of this. Pick up the collected edition of that anime and watch all the Youko centric story arcs. Now that is character development. She went from being a character I wanted to punch in the face to being one of my favorites. I'm very concerned with this book, because I see virtually no growth of the main character. She's just as annoying at the end of the book as she is in the beginning. The biggest issue I had was her stance on family. It's infuriating. I just can't believe anyone with access to TV and the internet can be so utterly oblivious to the real world and how not all families get along. Maybe that will be a lesson she learns in the next book. One can only hope. But honestly, she shouldn't NEED to learn that lesson. It should be obvious unless she lived under a bloody rock (which she didn't). I'm seriously debating whether to even read the next book, but part of me still wants to give it a chance because it is C.S. Friedman and part of me is still hoping this can somehow be salvaged.
