The performance captured in this recording recalls the essence of the communal celebrations of poetry, stories, jokes, prayer, and music in which Rumi's work was first uttered, but presents it in a distinctive contemporary setting. Coleman's words combine with the cello of Grammy Award-winner Eugene Friesen, carrying the language directly into the heart of the listener with a diverse menu of world folk melodies, Bach, and improvisation.
As Rumi wrote: "What is the soul? Consciousness. The more awareness, the deeper the soul, and when such essence overflows, you feel a sacredness around. It's so simple to tell one who puts on a robe and pretends to be a dervish from the real thing. We know the taste of pure water...."

Delightful

I don't have a lot of audio poetry to compare this to, but I love listening to accessible Rumi translations in Barks' down-home tones. The cd presents part/all of a live public reading, so I get Barks' interspersed patter before/between poems, which I really enjoy. The accompanying cello seems designed to cue listeners into the tone of the poem being read. I find the music enlivens the reading, but I can imagine that if you have trouble concentrating or hearing, it could be distracting. If you're not sure about this cd, you can listen to Barks doing a reading on You Tube before buying. I really enjoy listening to it in the car while I try (more or less unsuccessfully) to have an open heart toward other drivers during rush hour.

Poetry Meets Meditation and says 'Hello'.

If meditation leads to poetry and poetry leads to meditation, this CD completes the circle. As a live recording we get the benefit of hearing the audience's responses to Coleman Barks' delivery of Rumi's words in translation. So, in a sense, WE get to be there too.
I listen to this CD often, when walking, when driving, or just sitting still in my study.

a cd that nourishes

any reading by Barks is wonderful, & this cd, with these wonderful poems and Eugene Friesen's cello has never sounded better. listen to the world sing.
