Good story as to what happens after they are taken by the Indians.

Really enjoyed this read. Family History involved with us. I liked the way P. Gifford wrote this as historical and biological too. I hope John had it as easy as in this book. It was a terrible thing all around Groton at that time.

Great reading

As one of possibly thousands of Longley descendants, I have known of the bare bones story of the capture and eventual return from the Indians of John Longley, but this book, with its companion, "Captured", made the story come alive. I would recommend it to anyone, whether or not a descendant, who loves historical fiction and wants to learn more about the French-Indian wars in the late 1600's and early 1700's. They're hard to put down once started.

Longley family story

I am a descendant of the Longley family of Groton, MA so this book was a very special read for me. The story was well written and had a lot of supporting information about the colonial era and difficulties between the Indians and English that really helped me understand the times. The author fleshed out the characters very well. It had some very suspenseful moments that had me on the edge of my seat.

About the Author

Jason W. Osborne is Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.  He is also Professor of Applied Statistics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, with a secondary appointment in Public Health Science.  He teaches and publishes on "best practices" in quantitative and applied research methods. He has served as evaluator or consultant on projects in public education (K-12), instructional technology, higher education, nursing and health care, medicine and medical training, epidemiology, business and marketing, and jury selection in death penalty cases. He served as founding editor of Frontiers in Quantitative Psychology and Measurement and has been on the editorial boards of several other journals (such as Practical Assessment, Research, and Evaluation). Jason also publishes on identification with academics (how a student's self-concept impacts motivation to succeed in academics) and on issues related to social justice and diversity (such as Stereotype Threat). A Must Have Resource for Statisticians

I bought this book for some research I was doing for my thesis, and when I started reading the book I was amazed at how many different practical issues are addressed. This has become by far my favorite statistical book and is easy to understand for statistical graduate students. I plan on using this book as a resource throughout my career as a data analyst.

A far cry from some of the wittier fractured fairy tales, Whybrow (A Baby for Grace) paints this picture with broad strokes. In letters sent to his parents, Little Wolf chronicles his sluggish journey to Uncle Bigbad's Cunning College for Brute Beasts in Frettnin Forest. He hopes to learn from his uncle the nine Rules of Badness ("Huff and puff a lot"; "Blow everybody down," etc.) in order to earn his BAD Badge and convince his family that he isn't a "goody-4-paws." Finally, the young wolf reaches his uncle's school, devoid of students ("I am so frightfully frightening, they all fled and flew away!" explains the former educator), and the grouchy beast eventually expels Little Wolf. Befriended by a pack of Cub Scouts, the little fellow is at long last awarded a badgeAalbeit not the one he left home to earn. The expected fixtures are all here: the uncle unsuccessfully huffs and puffs to try to blow down the scouts' tents and disguises himself as Little Red Riding Hood's granny. Fans of Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series may be amused by some of the bathroom humor (Little Wolf returns from the camp with three cans of baked beans, which Uncle Bigbad greedily devours and which hasten his demise when his proximity to the fire causes him to explode), but much of Pilkey's winning originality is missing here. Ross's understated, childlike black-and-white sketches offer a welcome counter to the obvious text but can't completely bail out this lame spoof. Ages 8-12. (Oct.)

Grade 2-4-Little Wolf is altogether too well behaved for his fierce wolf family, so they send him to Cunning College to take badness lessons from his Uncle Bigbad, the nastiest wolf of all. However, Little Wolf's education doesn't turn out the way anyone expects, and the result is the fall-down funny (but never preachy) story of a cheerful nonconformist finding a way to be himself. Written in a style somewhere between A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh and Dav Pilkey's The Adventures of Captain Underpants (Scholastic, 1997), the story owes its humor as much to Ross's line drawings of the irrepressible youngster as to Whybrow's clever narrative, told through Little Wolf's letters home to his family. The book begs to be read aloud: Uncle Bigbad shouts all his lines in capital letters ("GRRRR! BEGONE, VILE BALL OF FLUFF!") and Little Wolf uses deliciously creative nonwords like "skwish," "lipsmackerous," and "frozz." References to "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Three Little Pigs," and the Cub Scouts will engage young readers. So, too, will Little Wolf, who is a wuss by wolf standards but still eats beetles and rabbit rolls, scares a lady at a bus stop, and plays inside a fallen-down chimney because he likes getting dirty. Successful as comedy, fractured fairy tale, and coming-of-age story all in one, Little Wolf's Book of Badness is terrific.

Having actually brushed his teeth and shown other signs of being a ``goodie-4-paws,'' Little Wolf is dispatched by his concerned parents to Uncle Bigbad's Cunning College For Brute Beasts (``Our Motto: The Badder the Better'') to learn the Nine Rules of Badness. In a series of letters home, Little Wolf not only protests that it was all a joke, he also recounts a series of daffy incidents, culminating in Uncle Bigbad's sudden death from standing too close to the fire after a surfeit of ``bakebeans.'' Little Wolf inherits Uncle Bigbad's loot and ``BAD'' badge, but having met a troop of cubsas in cub scoutshe develops a new code of ethics and a taste for further adventure. Plenty of blots, scratch-outs and simple pen-and-ink drawings give Little Wolf's letters a suitably disheveled look; readers afflicted with delicate sensitivities need not apply, but fans of Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants will be heartily amused by this broad British farce. This is my favorite childhood book , its adventurous and funny . The journey that he taking is pretty amazing , the book has good quality and printing. would recommend it .

Reading Is Fun

This book created an interest in reading for my 7 year old at that time when reading became more of a struggle than a delight. We stumbled across Little Wolf's Book on the not so exciting weekly trip to the library. My son started reading the book in the car and for once I had to make him put a book down before coming to my dinning room table. My son read the book in four days and even took it to school and told some of his friends about Little Wolf. My son even took his own money and bought himself a journal. This book even encourages other good habits. To this day my son writes daily, sometimes twice a day. I am loving every bit of his enthusiasm toward reading and writing.

For the person who ridicules this book must have been born a reader, born a master of the English language and never had to start at A then make his/her way to Z! From my son's experience with this book I can attest to the knowledge we fail to recognize our children have. My son took the misspelled words and related to them. When he first began writing the words resembled the misspelled words in the book. He wrote the sounds he heard just as he heard them. It's all in the process of learning. It made my son feel better knowing that he is not the only one misspells words while writing. Little did I know this book was made for the 9-12 age groups, not for a seven year old, but it worked wonders. Built his confidence and created a passion for reading and writing. Thank you Ian Whybrow!

Kept an 8-year old then a 10-year-old rapt for an afternoon

In response to the review below, my 8-year old LOVED the "ly" endings to all the salutations in Little Wolf's letters. He also pointed out (with gleeful superiority)how funny it was that various words were mispelled. He was given this book after he thoroughly enjoyed the second in the series. Then his big brother took the book for a long look. Very funny, entertaining, goofy English humor. I love the ink splotches. I just wish they were already in paperback and I'd give them out!

Another great QlikView book!

I've been a certified QlikView developer for 6 months now, but been in the BI-field for several years (MS BI-stack) - the last two years at QlikView Solution Partner SYSCO AS.
One thing I noticed when starting out on QlikView was the lack of good books. Now at least, there are two. If you're new to Qlikview - you really ought to buy this book as well as QlikView 11 for Developers. They complement each other nicely. I'd say even more experienced developers will enjoy this book and pick up good hints and tricks here.

It really is a proper cookbook, with recipes that you follow - and along the way you get explanations on why this works as well as how you can implement these recipes in the real world. The author clearly knows his stuff, and the book is written in a clear and consise manner.
I've really enjoyed this book, and had I'm glad I have an electronic copy - as that won't be worn out by frequent use...

Excellent & Useful Tips

The book contains approximately 100 short "how to" examples of Qlikview visualizations, calculations and scripting.

This is an excellent reference for many QV tasks and a good way to learn no matter your level. I picked up quite a few new tricks. The book organization is good, the examples clear and short. The "How it Works" explanations are gems. Stephen's experience is broad and he freely shares his advanced knowledge.

I highly recommend this book for all QV developers. You'll recover the purchase price with one tip!

The book is available in print and e-book. The print version is in black and white, and I found some of the figures hard to understand without color. The e-book uses color and is much easier to follow, so I recommend the e-book.

I think the macro examples are interesting, but inappropriate for this book. At the very least, I would have liked to seen a warning about the limitations of using these macros on the server.

As a long time QlikView Developer, couldn't wait to open QlikView and start applying the tips and tricks Stephen wisely explains. Even experieced developers (I'd say, specially them) will get the advantage of Stephen's strong QlikView skills from the very first moment.

This is not a book to read. This book is to enjoy with your laptop in front of you and get these awesome "Wow!" moments we in QlikView love.

To be honest, I was looking for a book of this kind. It took me less than one day to read the whole 11 chapters, and get some new brilliant ideas I will borrow for my next projects.

A must if you are a QlikView Developer.
