A Gem

I loved this story and I loved reading this book. It’s a treat to experience both. Plum takes us into the lives of five friends who are struggling to manage their feelings of outrage for the Iraq war. It’s a fresh story line and I found the characters to be compelling and three dimensional. Through Plum’s gracious writing, a picture develops of each friend’s connection to one another and the war. And like a painter using the pointillism technique, Plum gives only dabs of information here and there and makes readers connect the dots. This approach could be annoying or cloying in the hands of a less talented writer. Plum, however, is masterful and the net effect is rewarding and astonishing. I won’t reveal plot details, but wait until you get to the end! I was floored. I highly recommend this book.

A lesson of war that's relevant today

This novel shows the true impact of the unfortunate death of a soldier and the even more unfortunate retribution that results. I had the immense pleasure of taking a workshop course with Hilary Plum at the Iowa Summer Writing Festival in 2014 which helped illuminate a lot of aspects of her novel.

extremely disappointing

Unfortunately, this book is a waste of time and money for anyone who is serious about learning anything significant about using digital technology for architectural photography. Here's why:

1. The book has 135 pages. 77 pages are dedicated to information about
equipment, digital work flow and post shooting. The information in these 77 pages is widely available in other, more complete, sources and only serves as padding in this book.

2. Significant portions of each page are blank. But many of the photo illustrations are so small that they can not convey the kind of information that someone needs to evaluate them. On page 58, there are several photos sized at .375 square inch (a postage stamp is .8 square inch). Although other pictures are larger, they are so small that they do not illustrate enough information. Why is not the wasted, blank space on each page used for larger, easier to read photos?

3. The use of High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography, the digital technique of combining the useful segments of more than one exposure, is of important consideration to someone contemplating the extreme brightness range of many architectural interiors and some exteriors. The author devotes only 1/2 page of text (if you consider the blank area), and 1 photo slightly larger than a postage stamp and 3 others .06 square inches in size to this important topic.

In the middle ages, alchemists would write books about their experiments but withhold essential information that would have allowed the reader to duplicate the process. The author of this book, who apparently is an experienced architectural photographer, has succeeded in upholding the archaic tradition of these alchemists.

From an architect's perspective

This book is for the architect or engineer who doesn't want to hire a professional photographer, so it's a little dry and covers ground that most photographer's already know, such as how a camera works. However, it gives a lot of good information for the novice architectural photographer such as using shift lens and "painting with light." My favorite part was how to cut and paste in Photoshop when windows are blown out by exposure

for the right audience

I was a practicing architect for 30 years before becoming an architectural photographer. As the negative reviewers have stated (with such passion) experienced photographers will find this book elementary. Regardless, I highly recommend it for those starting out in architectural photography (digital or otherwise) and for designers who want to photograph their own work. The chapter on the author's post processing workflow is worth the price of the book alone.

The Place to Start

A child's laughter
Cures the heart!
Florian's book
Is the place to start.

At first they're so silly
Just read them for fun.
But he'll have you thinking (and discussing)
Before the book's done.

Here's a couple of my favorites:

"Peter picked his nose.
Pulled out a garden hose,
A herd of sheep, a flock of geese,
Six chickens who could speak Chinese,
Ten bumblebees, a speeding train,
And NEVER picked his nose again."

and

"The greatest invention was not the car,
Not the lightbulb and not the guitar,
Not the train and not the plane,
Not the umbrella which blocks all the rain.
No, the greatest invention,
It may seem absurd,
The greatest invention by far is
The word."

Florian has written a delightful book that fully understands and appreciates a child's intelligence, curiosity and sense of humor (not to mention the adult who often finds him/herself reading it to them).

Wonderful Book!

I love poetry books like this one. Short funny poems that make you smile. I think books like Poem Depot are a great way to get kids to read and think about poetry. The poems are short, fun to read and they all have nice black and white illustrations to go with them. Topics of the poem is anything and everything – from Spacemen to Mermaids – Broccoli to Cereal and beyond! Fans of Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein (like me) will love this book. I like how there is an index to the poems in the back and also an index of first lines – very nice touch.

About the Author
George Lovell is a Methodist minister and consultant in the field of ministry and mission. He has published widely and was awarded a Lambeth Palace DD by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2006. Dr Neil G. Richardsonwas Tutorin New Testament Studies and later Principal of Wesley College, Bristol. He served as President of the British Methodist Conference in 2003-2004.

Dr. Kainer lives in Washington, DC, where she has practiced, supervised, lectured, and written about clinical psychoanalytic theory and for the past 30 years. She is on the teaching and supervisory faculty of the Washington School of Psychiatry and on the faculty of the Washington Society of Psychoanalytic Psychology.
