These unpretentious short stories focus on the modern South, portraying the protagonists, both black and white, at moments of special tension or insight. In the title story a decaying country church hires a professional evangelist for inspiration. Other stories depict a jilted woman on the edge of madness and a gathering of the new and old South as represented by the mourners at an ailing mother's bedside. Brown, whose work has appeared in McCall's and Grand Street , does not here possess the depth of the most accomplished Southern contemporary writers, such as Eudora Welty and Peter Taylor, but her competent, straightforward tales will please general readers seeking high-quality leisure fare. A wonderful storyteller

I just heard Miss Brown give a reading from this volume, and I must say it was a very well-told story. I heard her described as the "First Lady of Alabama Letters" and I think we're doing well if that is the case.

Loved it,

I had never heard of this book until the author died. It is a wonderful collections of short stories. A great read. And good discussion book if you want to read for a book club.

Magnificent use of the English language

This book is a true treasure! I am sorry I learned about Mary Ward Brown from reading her obituary. Her use of language and stories are truly marvelous.
