Clarence Dillon rose from obscure beginnings to expand a small firm into the Wall Street juggernaut Dillon, Read, & Co., Inc. This fascinating biography traces Dillon's life from his origins as the son of Polish immigrants through his brilliant career on Wall Street to his mysterious withdrawal from the business scene prior to the crash of the stockmarket in 1929. Daring, secretive, cunning, and cautious, Dillon was characterized as "very cold and aloof", yet he bailed out many of his partners and associates who were forced into personal bankruptcy after the Crash. After he liquidated his investments, Dillon spent his time developing his cultural life while preserving his wealth and influencing international events. He associated with such notable figures as James Forrestal and Paul Nitze. Perez and Willett capture the dazzling world of high finance in the Roaring Twenties.
About the Author
ROBERT C. PEREZ is Associate Professor of Finance at the Hagan School of Business, Iona College, and former Vice-President and partner of F. Eberstadt & Co.
EDWARD F. WILLETT received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics from Princeton University and taught courses in that field for sixteen years both there and at Smith College. He first met Ferdinand Eberstadt while at Dillon Read & Co. in the 1920s and was one of the founders of F. Eberstadt & Co., Inc. in 1931

Clarence Dillon, Wall Street Enigma---The Tip of the Iceberg about Dillon, One Of The Most Powerful Men Of His Era.

This is a book about tycoon Clarence Dillon. This book renders an invaluable service to our country because it sheds some light on the personality and activities of Clarence Dillon.
Clarence Dillon was almost an exact clone of Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., father of JFK. Like Kennedy, Dillon made mega millions in the 1920's, only to get his money out of the market just before the Crash of 1929 at a very young age.
Dillon spent the rest of his life as a dilettante, dabbling in almost everything under the sun, from wine making, to painting, to shady dealings with European political figures of every stripe. Where Joseph P. Kennedy operated by manipulating his children in their roles high in the government, Dillon did the same thing, only working vicariously through his younger banking partners in the firm Dillon, Read. I would be hard pressed to say who was the most influential, Kennedy or Dillon.
What I do know is that this book, as workmanlike as it is, only reveals the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the real story
of Clarence Dillon, who truly was a Wall Street enigma.

Naturally being a cover up artist, Perez didn't mention Dillon's membership in The Pilgrims Society, nor that of his silver stealing son.

I used this book to create the character of Clarence Dillon in a play that I wrote. Specific examples of his behavior and specific quotes from his contemporaries were essential to my portrait.
